(For those confused by my choice of costume, it may help to know that the first VHS I ever owned was "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", and that I read every Robin Hood book I could find in my elementary school and junior high libraries. The Bold Outlaw was one of my very earliest fannish obsessions; only Star Trek and Star Wars predate it. So you can probably imagine my reaction the day Q transported the ST:TNG cast into one of his tales).

How many have your name?

Wow, I guess I'm pretty uncommon. But then, I've been told that before. *BOMP*

Well, most Scandinavians didn't have a "last" name as we think of it until the early part of the 20th century. Before that point, most had a couple of names they used as circumstances required. Patronymics (Olson, Svenson, etc), the name of their farm, the name of their village, any cool feature of their neighborhood, etc.

Dad's almost pure Norwegian. Mom's mostly of Scottish extract by way of Canada, but can trace other parts of her heritage back to pre-Revoltionary War America. Ever read the sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards? (Bet you did in high school--American Lit, or maybe history.) Anyway, we're descended from him through an illegitimate great-grandaughter.
