Whee, a couple of memes. Looking forward to Heroes in a couple of hours; still no luck writing, but doing better than this weekend. Everything still tastes wrong, and my sinuses are all clogged, but I don't feel absolutely miserable anymore, yay is me.
(For those confused by my choice of costume, it may help to know that the first VHS I ever owned was "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", and that I read every Robin Hood book I could find in my elementary school and junior high libraries. The Bold Outlaw was one of my very earliest fannish obsessions; only Star Trek and Star Wars predate it. So you can probably imagine my reaction the day Q transported the ST:TNG cast into one of his tales).
Wow, I guess I'm pretty uncommon. But then, I've been told that before. *BOMP*

Date: 2006-10-10 03:21 am (UTC)My actual real first name is pretty generic, but my last name is of Norweigan extraction, so I wasn't too surprised at the meme results for me. There are maybe two of my name on the entire Internet, last time I googled.
I think this meme actually calculates by odds or something rather than by how many name records show up in a search. Bujold must be a pretty rare last name, then, statistically speaking. (I keep meaning to pick her books up, but I can't afford new and I've never found the earlier ones on sale at the local used book store).

Although, did you know that the only other country/region in the world which has sent a higher proportion of its population to America is Ireland? The difference is that Ireland had a much higher population to begin with so their absolute numbers were higher, so they are far more distinct as an ethnic/cultural group today. But there are as many Norwegian-Americans as there are Norwegians.

Date: 2006-10-30 06:37 am (UTC)One of my grandfather's cousins wrote a history of their families, ours and the Dahlen's, intertwined back over the last five hundred years or so; I have no idea how she managed to connect all the research, since until coming to this country the last name tended to change every generation or so as my ancestors tended to keep moving on to new farms, but it makes fascinating reading. My granddad's granddad was the one who came over with his children, and the book talks about the Norweigan communities they settled with, and the other Norweigan families the kids married into, and so on and so forth.
Genetically, I'm 25% Norweigan, 6.25% Irish, 6.25% German, and the rest motley generic American from British settlers who came over in the 1600's and an Indian bride or two mixed in. Makes for some interesting termperaments among the extended family. =)

Date: 2006-10-31 03:54 am (UTC)Dad's almost pure Norwegian. Mom's mostly of Scottish extract by way of Canada, but can trace other parts of her heritage back to pre-Revoltionary War America. Ever read the sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards? (Bet you did in high school--American Lit, or maybe history.) Anyway, we're descended from him through an illegitimate great-grandaughter.

Date: 2006-10-10 03:50 am (UTC)I've seen my name on a bunch of these memes and It's always sucky candy. (pardon the pun)
THAT'S what I heard? That was you? Squeeing?
I think that someone broke the "how many of me" thing.
I'm guessing just the one, when it comes to me. My first name is pretty common (at least, in Chicago) but my last name is a mutated form of McAteer -- which, coincidentally, is the same gaelic root as MacIntyre. Go figure.
