(For those confused by my choice of costume, it may help to know that the first VHS I ever owned was "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", and that I read every Robin Hood book I could find in my elementary school and junior high libraries. The Bold Outlaw was one of my very earliest fannish obsessions; only Star Trek and Star Wars predate it. So you can probably imagine my reaction the day Q transported the ST:TNG cast into one of his tales).

How many have your name?

Wow, I guess I'm pretty uncommon. But then, I've been told that before. *BOMP*

Yeah, I don't think there are too many people out there named jedibuttercup ;). Besides, I don't think that thing's very accurate. It says there are no people in the USA named Lois Bujold. Which, being as she is my favorite author bar none, I know is inaccurate.

I give out the worst candy.

I've seen my name on a bunch of these memes and It's always sucky candy. (pardon the pun)

THAT'S what I heard? That was you? Squeeing?

I think that someone broke the "how many of me" thing.

I'm guessing just the one, when it comes to me. My first name is pretty common (at least, in Chicago) but my last name is a mutated form of McAteer -- which, coincidentally, is the same gaelic root as MacIntyre. Go figure.

Norwegian? I'm of Norwegian extract as well. And my last name is very common for Norwegians. It means "the hill." (Or "hillock," as in the little hill on the side of a mountain/larger hill, but English doesn't really have a good word that means that, so I stick with "hill".) If you get a good topographical map of Norway, you will find that, uh, there are very few places in Norway that aren't on a hill, hillock, or mountain in some fashion or another. So it's a very common name in Norway.

However, not in America :)

Although, did you know that the only other country/region in the world which has sent a higher proportion of its population to America is Ireland? The difference is that Ireland had a much higher population to begin with so their absolute numbers were higher, so they are far more distinct as an ethnic/cultural group today. But there are as many Norwegian-Americans as there are Norwegians.

Well, most Scandinavians didn't have a "last" name as we think of it until the early part of the 20th century. Before that point, most had a couple of names they used as circumstances required. Patronymics (Olson, Svenson, etc), the name of their farm, the name of their village, any cool feature of their neighborhood, etc.

Dad's almost pure Norwegian. Mom's mostly of Scottish extract by way of Canada, but can trace other parts of her heritage back to pre-Revoltionary War America. Ever read the sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards? (Bet you did in high school--American Lit, or maybe history.) Anyway, we're descended from him through an illegitimate great-grandaughter.
