As usual, I rounded all TV episodes (however viewed) up to the nearest half-hour mark and most movies to two hours total, then added in repeats. As with 2024, I watched more documentaries and "reality" shows than narrative fiction, many of them on my propped-up smartphone while doing repetitive tasks (blame the ADHD for that; I've found it actually helps). And I saw twelve movies in theaters, a high-water mark in post-pandemic times.

For posterity's sake: that adds up to 1985.5 hours of screentime (5.44 hrs/day). Anyway, on to my nineteenth year of tracking: started off as usual with a New Year's watch party with the BFF followed by a bunch of true crime for background noise while doing chorse and packing up the Christmas decorations. We'll see how it goes from here!

As usual, I rounded all TV episodes (however viewed) up to the nearest half-hour mark and all movies to two hours total, then added in repeats. I watched less narrative entertainment in 2024, in exchange for a massive number of documentaries, many of them on my propped-up smartphone while doing repetitive tasks. I did see seven movies in theaters: still a lot less than pre-pandemic levels, but it felt good to occasionally get out again for a meal and an experience. And then, of course, there was the Paris Olympics!

I feel like I spent a lot of time using the screen as a distraction from more boring or distressing things this last year; the totals were insane enough I almost don't want to mention them. But for posterity's sake: 1870.5 hours of on-screen entertainment (5.12 hrs/day). A lot of that might not have been actual unproductive time, but still. *wince*

Anyway, on to my eighteenth year of tracking: started off as usual with a New Year's watch party with the BFF and her husband. We'll see how it goes from here!

As usual, I rounded all TV episodes (whether live or DVD) up to the nearest half-hour mark and all movies to two hours total, then added in repeats. I saw only four movies in theater during 2023; at home, I indulged in a lot of reality TV, streaming, and comfort rewatches (many of them for my 'I own it, but I haven't seen it since I started logging; should I still keep it?' project).

I also dove head-first into documentaries and Reel Rock, which probably influenced the year's total significantly - it came to 1055.5 total hours of on-screen entertainment (2.89 hrs/day), a definite jump from 2022's 940 hours (2.58 hrs/day).

Historically, since I started tracking, my average ranged between 1.62 hours/day and 2.52 hours/day until 2020, but roughly two hours/day was the sweet spot. It's fluctuated higher since, though not as dramatically as my book count; I'm not predicting this year will be any different, given it's another Olympics year!

As usual, I rounded all TV episodes (whether live or DVD) up to the nearest half-hour mark and all movies to two hours total, then added in repeats. I saw zero movies in theater during 2022, a lingering consequence of the plague and none of my usual viewing partners being comfortable resuming; but at home, I indulged in a lot of reality TV, Disney+, Discovery/History Channel, and comfort rewatches. With the 2022 Olympics added in, that came to a total of 940 total hours of on-screen entertainment (2.58 hrs/day) - just slightly under last year's 945.5 (2.59 hrs/day).

Historically, since I started tracking, my average ranged between 1.62 hours/day and 2.52 hours/day until 2020, but roughly two hours/day was the sweet spot. I'm still not getting out nearly as much as I used to, though, and I do watch extra in Olympics years, so last year's slightly higher number repeating is not a surprise. We'll see if this is the new normal going forward.

As usual, I rounded all TV episodes (whether live or DVD) up to the nearest half-hour mark and all movies to two hours total, then added in repeats. I still saw only 3 movies in theater during the year, one of those at a drive-in; but at home, I indulged in a lot of reality TV, Disney+, Discovery/History Channel, and comfort rewatches. With the delayed 2020 Olympics added in, that came to a rousing total in 2021 of 945.5 total hours of on-screen entertainment (2.59 hours/day) - well up from 2020's total.

Historically, since I started tracking, my average has ranged between 1.62 hours/day and 2.52 hours/day, but roughly two hours/day has been the sweet spot. Even with my otherwise busy schedule from starting to commute again half the week, keeping up my reading, and roughly doubling my writing from the prior year, I still ended on the high side of average in "2020 Take 2". It'll be interesting to see what 2022 (Hopefully not "2020 Take 3") brings!

Because I started off the year with S2 of The Mandalorian and an ep of Forged in Fire; this is the way. :)

There were far fewer trips to the theater this year for obvious reasons, but a lot more Discovery/History Channel type TV. As a result, in 2020 I watched 749 total hours of on-screen entertainment (2.05 hours/day) - about 7 hours short of 2019's total.

Historically, since I started tracking, my average has ranged between 1.62 hours a day and 2.52 hours a day, but roughly two hours per day has been pretty much the sweet spot. I would have thought it would have been higher this year - but I guess I can tolerate only so much time in front of the TV? As you'll see from today's other summary posts, my 2020 distraction of choice went in another drection!

Historically, since I started tracking, my average has ranged between 1.62 hours a day and 2.52 hours a day, but roughly two hours per day has been pretty much a sweet spot? Exercise viewing - and regular movies out/Survivor nights with Mom - are responsible for probably half of that, and fanfic research for much of the rest, but there *are* still a few series I follow regularly Just Because. (Quelle surprise, I know.)

If I round all TV episodes (whether live or DVD) up to the nearest half-hour mark and all movies to two hours total, then add in repeats, in 2018 I watched 700 total hours of on-screen entertainment (1.92 hours/day).

That's significantly up from 2017's numbers (590 hours, or 1.62 hours/day), but pretty much in line with 2016's and 2015's numbers. Though I suspect it would have been much closer to 2017's without the 110-hour chunk that was the 2018 Winter Olympics. :) It just seems to work out that way in my new apartment.

That's a significant drop from the last couple of years' average of 704.5 hours in 2016 (1.93 hours/day) and 699 hours in 2015 (1.91 hours/day). The move, other RL distractions, less money for the theater, and less must-see-TV all contributed to the decline.

By comparison, I watched 920 hours in 2012 (2.52 hrs/day), 785 hours in 2011 (2.15 hrs/day), 777 in 2010, 677 in 2009, and 653 in 2008. Finding a happy medium, perhaps? Or the effects of that three-week trip away? Who knows. At least a third of them were spent sweating away on the exercise machine, regardless.

By comparison, I watched 785 hours in 2011, 777 in 2010, 677 in 2009, and 653 in 2008. That's a pretty significant jump! But just as the pattern break between 2008-09 and 2010-11 was precipitated by starting to exercise on my elliptical in front of the TV, this jump has a distinct cause. Namely, my brother moved the exercise equipment to a room without a cable jack. So I had to exercise to DVDs and then catch my favored currently-airing programs some other way. =)

By comparison, I watched 777 in 2010, 677 in 2009, and 653 in 2008. The jump between 2009/2010 can probably be attributed to watching while exercising on the elliptical, because it stayed fairly steady between 2010/2011.

If I round all TV episodes (whether live or DVD) up to the nearest half-hour mark and all movies to two hours total, then add in repeat viewings, in 2010 I watched 520 hours of TV + 257 hours of movies = 777 total hours of on-screen entertainment.

By comparison, I watched 677 in 2009, and 653 hours in 2008. The increase is pretty evenly split between TV and movies, though I'm not sure how I fit it all in; it averages out to about 2.1 hours per day. When the heck did I find the time to do so much writing and reading around all that? *shrug*

This'll be my third year tracking TV (DVD or live), movie, and other viewing; see 2008 and 2009.

If I average all TV episodes to one hour and all movies to two, counting repeat viewings, in 2009 I watched 467 hours of TV + 210 hours of movies = 677 hours of on-screen entertainment.

That's only 24 hours more than 2008, which is kind of weird; that's not the impression I'd got at all, considering how much time I spend watching TV while on the elliptical now. (For perspective: 677 hours works out to only 1.85 hours per day-- but it also totals 28 days and five hours, or almost a full month over the course of the year).

So, last year around this time I set out to track all my movie and TV viewing for 2008. The final list is... about what I expected.

If I average all TV episodes to one hour and all movies to two, counting repeat viewings, in 2008 I watched 426 hours of TV + 220 hours of movies + 7 hours of Webisodes = 653 hours of on-screen entertainment.

For perspective: that works out to only 1.78 hours per day-- but it also totals 27 days and change, or almost a full month over the course of the year. I wonder if that'll change in 2009?

OK. So, I finished blitzing my brain with Eureka Season 2 this weekend. Nice of SciFi to leave half the season up on their website, no internet backflips or debit cards required. They'd better keep the habit up as Season 3 progresses, because I'm seriously addicted now, and I don't get cable.

I think Jack Carter has turned into one of my favorite TV characters, ever. He's just so darned likeable. And while the science in his super-scientist-inhabited town is often a wee bit fuzzy-- season 2 included actual alchemy and multiple references to the Akashic Field, for example-- the entire cast of characters is twenty kinds of awesome. I don't even mind the romantic triangle, and those usually drive me halfway up the wall; maybe it's because there are truly three sides to this one. The boys might profess to hate each other, but they're smirking half the time when they argue, and they're capable of dropping the rivalry and working together successfully with or without Allison when serious problems need solving. It will take something away from the show if she ever settles on either one of them.

Crossing this show with SG-1 or SGA or WarGames or The Prestige or any of a dozen other shows or movies will be as easy as pie, if I ever have the time to write in the fandom. I'm still stuck on Oz in SGA. He just won't open his mouth! I'm thinking scrap the current story and start over, at this point.
