PG; Dresden Files, 1800 words. For Day 18; holiday fic, post-"Small Favor".

Christmas has never been all that festive a holiday for me, any more than birthdays, or Thanksgivings, or any of the other typical family get-together occasions.

For all of his faith, for all of the strong will Michael had spent so many years honing, he was only human.

PG, Dresden Files/Eureka. 1500 words; roughly mid-series for each.

In my defense, at the time I had no way of knowing just which bit of the mortal world lay across the dimensional walls from any given point in the Nevernever.

Buffy spun and dodged, a focused avatar of destruction: dancing in the chain mail Charity had lent her as though it weighed less than tissue paper.

The second time I found Ms. Summers leaning against a vehicle outside my apartment, I was considerably less surprised-- and considerably more relieved-- to see her.

Since I wrote my first Michael Carpenter story a couple of years ago-- my first non-crossover bookfic ever, if I remember right-- I've started populating the Dresdenverse with actors' faces. (Prior to that, believe it or not, I didn't actually visualise the characters at all; I tend to think neither in pictures nor in words, but concept-strings). And something hit me today, when I was rereading the bit in "Dead Beat" where Harry explains what's going on to Mac, proprietor of McAnnally's.

Mac? On whom bald looks good, and doesn't talk much, but is clearly tough as nails? Is totally Bruce Willis as DH4's John McClane. And Luccio's original body? Is now Dame Judy Dench, to me. LOL. Those are new; I'd been picturing Neal McDonough as seen in Tin Man as Michael and George Clooney in his Ocean's 11 guise as Marcone for awhile now. And Jordan Hinson as Eureka's Zoe Carter has been creeping in to play Molly lately.

I still don't have a Harry, though, other than the miniseries' not-quite-right Paul Blackthorne, or a Murphy-- I'd pick SMG, but her Buffy's too sharp-edged in my mind to ever qualify as "cute". Anyone have any suggestions, for them or any other significant book characters?

A Thought

"Dedicated, honorable, courageous, self-sacrificial loonies are absolutely the worst people in the world to go up against."
-- Harry Dresden, Death Masks

........ Just a little bit ironic there. Huh. I wonder just exactly how many of my favorite fictional heroes or heroines that descriptor could also apply to?

How many of yours? =)

Back at work this week. Not so much fun after vacation, but ironically enough, gives me more Internet proximity than gallivanting to the coast and Portland and theater pub and etcetera with the family. *grin* Evenings are still going to be very busy, though, until the 12th.

Speaking of! After the requisite Breakfast With Her Concerned Father, my brother gave his girlfriend a promise ring on Saturday. After about three weeks of actual dating. *boggles* Yeah, I think I called this one last month: sister-in-law sometime next year, for sure, unless something goes seriously awry. They are blindingly cute together. Mom even invited her to participate in family photos yesterday. Good thing I like her.

Anyway. Maybe I can catch up on more of my backlog of comments this week in between job duties. I spent today's borrowed moments distracting myself with a meme-- that one where you pick 12 characters, then answer 24 questions:

Character List:

1. Buffy Summers (B:tVS)
2. John McClane (Die Hard)
3. Zoë Washburne (Firefly)
4. Michael Carpenter (Dresden Files, bookverse)
5. Azkadellia (Tin Man)
6. James Tiberius Kirk (Star Trek)
7. Sarah Connor (Terminator: SCC)
8. Wesley Wyndham-Price (Angel)
9. Sara Sidle (CSI)
10. Evan Lorne (Stargate: Atlantis)
11. Éowyn (LotR)
12. Richard B. Riddick (Pitch Black, TCOR)

The Questions & Answers )

WHICH REMINDS ME. How many of you joined me in running out to buy a copy of Small Favor today? *dancing in chair*
