jedibuttercup: (gandalf reads)
*flops on couch, hand over eyes*

I spent the last ... uh, month or so ...? rereading all fourteen extant novels of the Dresden Files, plus the Side Jobs shortfic collection, and choosing a cast image for every character Harry exchanges a conversation with or gets a good description of. That's ... a lot of characters. And a lot of reading; thousands and thousands of pages' worth. Phew. Don't think I'll be doing that again for a few years.

(This is, by the way, why I haven't posted any new story parts in a few weeks. Later this week, I promise.)

Finished just in time. I'm going out to buy Skin Game after lunch tomorrow (having taken time off work for that purpose). And then I'm going to the cemetery, setting up my camp chair, and reading it with my dad. Since we can't actually discuss it this year. For my own personal memorial day observation. (He was looking forward to it, too.)

Anyway. There may be a spoiler-cut post sometime later today-ish? Anyone one else rushing out to buy it?

Forget the sufficiently advanced science and the fact that Kirk and his men had swum against the Currents of Time; the fact that their particular wizard might be one I'd actually heard of might just be the most unbelievable part of their tale.

So, I bought Ghost Story at lunch on Tuesday and had a reading party with [livejournal.com profile] maevebran....

I'm not going to go into any great detail, but... cut for spoilers, anyway. )

Anyway. I'll probably reread it and dissect in more detail later just what I did and didn't like, and did or didn't see coming, and where I see it going, et cetera... but I want to post before LJ crashes again, so. What did you think?

jedibuttercup: (yuletide)
So. I ended up writing five stories for my fifth [livejournal.com profile] yuletide: four full-length ones, and a short.

One of them is a dead giveaway, if you know my writing history; another is also a fandom and POV character I've written before; and the others are all new to me. All canon characters, all different fandoms, and split between gen and het this year. Between the five stories, they total 9800 words.

They'll be anonymous until next Saturday; if you can guess any of them before then, I'll write any prompt you like that fits the specifications I allowed my 2010 Wishlist participants. Have fun reading in the Yuletide Archive, if you haven't visited it yet - 2,647 stories this year, all in rare or new fandoms!

... Oh, and what's that you ask - what did I receive? Three lovely and very different stories:

  • The Man Who Knew What He Wanted, for 2007 TV miniseries "Tin Man". Does an excellent job getting into Zero's head right after the miniseries, lending depth and realism to the motivations of what was presented as a rather 2D bad-guy character on screen. I loved it, right down to the ambiguous ending.

  • The Truth of Reality, for the 2010 movie "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time". A collection of family moments with Prince Dastan (and a Tamina moment!) in the aftermath of the movie. Made me smile!

  • Waiting, for the "Dresden Files" book series by Jim Butcher. A fabulous short introspective piece from Charity Carpenter's POV during "Changes". An interlude in the life of one of those who also serve, as she thinks on her husband's supernatural career, and her daughter's.

  • \0/ Apparently I was a very good girl this year! If you know the fandoms, go and give them some love. ♥
