Sci-Fi Friday ... *woot*

Jury's still out on the changes on Stargate. This episode was obviously the big intro for Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell, so they didn't answer some of the other questions I have in enough detail. Like, why exactly did Jack bail out of the SGC's generalling position? Was it because SG-1 was departing to the four winds, or was his departure the reason they began to look into other jobs? Or was there some other cause? I get the feeling Teal'c, being identified as "of the Tau'ri" by the other Jaffa, is going to end up frustrated in politics and rejoin SG-1 for that reason; he doesn't seem to really respect Col. Mitchell yet, but I detected a distinctly amused twitch at the corner of his mouth a couple of times during their interactions.
Daniel -- well, poor man, he'll get his chance at Atlantis one of these days. Whoops, missed your flight; still on SG-1 by default! (Was it just me, or did it seem like this was a later Daedalus mission they were talking about, not the rescue one we saw on SG-Atlantis? Daniel said something about "months ago", didn't he, when mentioning Myrddin?) Unfortunately, that won't be until after his own show crashes, may that not be anytime soon. I sure wish I could see him reacting to McKay and Sheppard on a regular basis, though, especially with no Jack around anymore to keep him on his toes.
Vala's appearance was a lot of fun-- "Where's my Daniel?"-- and the Arthurian mythology promises to be interesting, but was I the only one sitting back on the couch going, "Enlightened? Tau'ri to Mr.-Twice-Ascended-Who-Remembers-It-This-Time, don't you perhaps think you have a better chance at pulling the sword from the stone than the others do?"
Cameron so far strikes me as that kid who has been chomping at the bit to get transferred into the TAG program with the really cool new friends he ran into at the playground, only to find that they've already moved on without him. Poor guy, I'd be disappointed too. He got on my nerves a little with the begging, but I think once he settles into the show he'll be a fun character. Hee, too, about the "limited but interesting gene pool" crack; he and Daniel really do look like they could be relatives. Though Daniel's new chin fuzz is a little distracting.
Atlantis was non-stop action, once again. I adore this show. Most of the developments were pretty predictable continuations of the Season One's cliffhanger ending-- except for cloaking the city, which, wasn't the city once a spacecraft itself that should have had its own cloak already?-- but all of it was exceedingly well done. I look forward to the rest of the season.
As for BSG....
I do NOT understand this show. Sometimes the plots are so obvious it makes me wince to see them develop, for example the medkit that got left behind after the chief had made a big stink about wanting to check and see if they had everything. Sometimes, however, the plots are so convoluted, and contain so many to-be-filled-in-later plot holes that it makes me dizzy trying to figure out where they're going with it. Regardless, though, I'm thoroughly hooked. =)
Urgh. I'd comment further, but lack of sleep is catching up with me. Not to mention the three hours I spent this afternoon shifting files around-- I packed 21 boxes of escrow files at the storage unit, then brought them back and unpacked them at the office. *yawn* I'm at that gritty stage of creeping exhaustion where I know the moment I lose focus on what I'm doing, I'll go down in flames. Well, at least I'll get sleep tonight. Time for a shower; in the morning I'll be off to Salem for my copy of HBP and a viewing of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" with the family. TTYL.

Date: 2005-07-16 12:30 am (UTC)SG: Atlantis--didn't watch it, though I may add it to the Tivo list. I didn't like the show last season, despite finding McKay amusing. I suspect I still won't like it--it doesn't have the grounding in contemporary settings that I like in SG-1; I'm always aware that I'm watching actors on a "futuristic" set. But I'll give it another try.
BSG was entertaining. I didn't buy the basic premise, though. Galactica, we're told, updates the emergency jump coordinates regularly and distributes them to the fleet. The fleet didn't get the most recent updates. But Galactica generated them. They know where the fleet would have jumped, and they know where Galactica jumped; why in God's name would they have to go back to the last site to calculate anew where the fleet went--just calculate a jump from where they are NOW to where the fleet jumped.
Also, while I sympathize with Boomer (both of her), Starbuck's right. They aren't safe around her (as Adama can testify). They ought to cap her.
And it's a very brief moment while the OD is taking down the network, but there's a glimpse of his monitor showing that the Cylons fully penetrated their mainframe just before he finishes. They've been hacked. This wouldn't matter if Tigh had ordered them to purge every system and restore from backups...but that didn't happen. I see bad things in their future.
All in all, though, an entertaining evening of Sci-Fi.
Atlantis
Date: 2005-07-25 11:54 am (UTC)I've never really had that problem... probably because my parents had me watching Star Wars and Star Trek as far back as I can remember. In the case of Atlantis, though, it does seem a little awkward sometimes that these are modern Americans continually stuck in a completely alien (no pun intended) setting. So far, however, the character dynamic has kept me coming back to it, even when I don't like the plots much. =)

Date: 2005-07-25 11:58 am (UTC)So far, it seems like all they wanted to use the Arthurian setting for was as a setup to introduce the Ori. Looks like there'll be plenty of room for fic writers to reconcile the Ancient view of Avalon with the one in our legends. =)

*wince* I've been kind of afraid that they're going to go the Sheppard/Weir route; after the ridiculously drawn out tension of the Sam/Jack not-quite-pairing on SG-1, I'd been kind of hoping they just wouldn't do coworker romance on Atlantis...
... That aside, though, it WAS cute. =)
