Day 30 - a photo of something big

Hoover Dam: responsible for impounding the largest reservoir in the US, by volume. I didn't see any signs of Megatron or the All-Spark on our tour, but it was still a pretty awe-inspiring sight. :) (October, 2012)


And last but not least, William Shatner (at Portland ComicCon). I grew up on reruns of Classic Trek, so I'm a Kirk fan from way back; and whatever else you think of him, The Shat is one of those larger-than-life people. (January, 2014)

Was just thinking that it was getting close to the 30 day mark when I saw the notification for this post in my inbox and was rather sad, and now I see that this is the last post. You have a wonderful eye and I have really enjoyed looking at your photos. Thank you for sharing them!

You're welcome. I'll have to make sure and post lots more after this summer's trip.

And FYI, I made sure to add Hurricane Ridge to the tentative trip itinerary. I hope to be able to post more about the deets next week, after I finalize it with maevebran, but there's no reason it shouldn't make the final cut. :) Thanks for the rec!

You're more than welcome for the rec! There are so very many beautiful places on the Olympic Peninsula that I could literally inundate you with suggestions for places to see, but I know you're going to be covering a lot of ground. The Olympic Peninsula is well worth spending an entire week to see, which is what I plan to do one of these days (hopefully). I've gotten really spoiled living up here in the Pacific Northwest, it really does have an embarrassment of riches where natural beauty is concerned!

By the way, if you haven't thought about it, you might consider taking one of the ferries north of Seattle to get to the peninsula instead of driving all the way around Puget Sound and then back up if you're not heading into Seattle or points south specifically. It will save a lot of your time and gas money (you'd probably spend as much on gas as the ferry toll).

Thank you for posting this meme - the photos were phenomenal. I feel like I took a tour of the US, too!

Hoover Dam is just the thing to make a person feel cosmically small, which is good for the ego.

Shatner! I like him and what he's done with his career. He's one of the few 'stars' that feels like you'd want to get to know, meaning I'd invite him to my house, and I can't say that for some other actors whom I admire, but who, frankly, have offscreen personalities too odd or edgy.

I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures! I have so much fun taking them; I'm pleased to be able to share the enjoyment with other people, too.

From what I hear Shatner was a lot more ego-fixated when he was a young and pretty thing, but he's loosened up a lot in recent years; I enjoyed his appearances at the con.

I had it bad for him when ST:TOS first came out, being 14 and all, and collected movie mags with his pictures in them - wish I had that scrapbook now! Yes, he was /larger than life/ in his acting ... but he could be subtle, and effectively emotional. Probably says lot about me that my friends were gaga over Spock, but I was not. Heee, can we say 'bourgeois'?

My first intro to Trek was as a toddler watching the reruns. People ask me what Captain? And I'm like CAPTAIN KIRK OF COURSE, no, not movie Kirk; not even nu!movie!Kirk, CLASSIC TV KIRK, dramatic pauses and ripped t-shirts and heavy eyeliner and all, he's a surprisingly intelligent character if you pay attention past the pretty and the drama! And hello, the pretty!

... So, yeah. Major persistent crush on early!Shatner, despite the fact that I'm of the generation who were largely contemporary fangirls of TNG. Spock had his good points; but it was Kirk for me from Day 1.

As far as TNG went, the Picard + Riker show always seemed to me as though they took the intelligent parts of both Kirk and Spock to form Picard, and the sexy and ... second-in-commandish? ... leftovers got poured into Riker, meaning that while Picard is a well-rounded and admirable character in his way, as a command team Kirk + Spock will still always win 100% of the time.
