The Writing Questions Meme:

1. my favorite story (of mine) this year:

I wrote a lot of fic this year that in retrospect, I really like; but I'll limit it to three. The first two are my [livejournal.com profile] sg_btvs ficathon entries. Each starred Daniel Jackson and a Summers, and make me go "aww":

-- Knower of Names, 3000 words, Buffy and Daniel meet on a plane in SG-1 Season 10 and end up exchanging phone numbers.

-- See For Yourself, 3700 words, clone!Daniel and clone!Jack go to Sunnydale in B:tVS Season 7, where 16-year-old "Nick" meets Dawn in the course of investigating the town's weirdnesses.

And the last-- well. Not "aww". I don't know why I love it so much:

-- Writ in Burnished Rows of Steel, 500 words, Firefly. Where Mal wins, at last. If it can be called winning.

2. my best story this year:

Ooh, hard to pick. There were several I felt very proud of, but I'll pick just two:

-- Retaking the Sky, my 4400-word Firefly AU, for the [livejournal.com profile] brains_in_a_jar ficathon. A sentient-ship-and-pilot retelling of the Firefly-verse, with Zoe as the ship and Wash as the pilot. It worked amazingly well, better than I'd expected.

-- Power of Two, a 9600-word B:tVS/SG-1 cross, set during SG-1 9.13 "Ripple Effect". Among the multiple SG-1s who appear is one including another Kendra, whose appearance makes serious waves in the life of Buffy, SGC Slayer trainer. Bonus Buffy/Mitchell UST.

3. the story most underappreciated by the universe:

I write so much these days, several stories inevitably slip through the cracks; and everything else pales beside the review-monster that is Back Again, Harry?

If I had to pick one-- my JP/Godzilla short got even less attention than most, (Even Dragons Have Their Ending) but two old movie-fandoms being crossed with no sex? I knew it wouldn't be a fan-magnet.

4. most fun story:

Return of the Medjai, a 1500-word Mummy/ST:TNG cross written for [livejournal.com profile] jilltanith. Writing the Mummy characters from Data's POV was a lot more entertaining than I'd expected.

Hello, My Name Is, the 2000-word B:tVS/SGA Oz & Rodney cross I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] butterflyflame, was a close second. Oz! And Rodney! In the same room! *grin*

5. sexiest story:

Um. This is me. I don't think I wrote anything all year that went above PG-13; there were a few kisses and some hand-touching, but that was about it. *lol*

6. hardest story to write:

A Clock Ticking, last year's Yuletide entry. It was for a slash request, in a small movie fandom where one-half of the pairing is dead at the end. Also, it was my first time to participate in Yuletide. You would not believe how many times I rewatched canon while trying to write it; I was terrified the recipient would be disappointed.

... And I suspect I'll say the same next year about this year's Yuletide, too.

7. biggest disappointment:

With Great Power (see question # 9). It burned in my gut the whole time I was writing it, and I almost couldn't bear to look at it when I was done.

There are other stories that didn't do well, or read awkwardly on looking back, but that one makes my stomach sink the most even now. I'm not sure it really says anything I wanted it to when I started it.

8. biggest surprise:

Nothing New Under the Sun, a teeny little Jonas POV piece, which got more love than I was expecting, and was even nominated for an award.

Also, of course, the big one: [livejournal.com profile] backagainharry. I had no idea how hungry-- and how crazy-- HP fandom was when I stuck my toe in. And 27,500 words later, I'm still in the story's setup phase.

9. most unintentionally telling story:

Under this category, I always put the ones that I write out of anger at the canon, rather than joyous exploration, even if no-one else noticed. (My biases showing, eek). This year, there were:

Moving On - 1,500 words, post-NFA, Illyria/Wes
Never Say We Die - 1,500 words, post-PotC:AWE, Liz & Will & Jack
Nothing New Under the Sun - 300 words, Stargate SG-1, Jonas POV
With Great Power - 4,600 words, SG-1/5th Element, Daniel-centric

10. looking back, did you write more fic this year? or less? or about the same as you thought you would?

I wrote a little less than last year, and I didn't finish any WIPs, but aside from that? I'm pretty damned satisfied with my total wordcount, and with the average wordcount per story, which is steadily improving.

11. what pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you never would have predicted a year ago?

Hm. The Leeloo & Eowyn fic was really unexpected (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen). And I had no idea I'd be hit upside the head by Dresden Files or Tin Man.

In general, though? I pretty much write where my impulses-- or my requesters-- take me. As you may have noticed. So there's always a lot of "wow, where did that come from?" going on.

12. did you taking any writing risks this year?

Depends on how you define "risk". Unaccustomed genres? I wrote a few slash, and a few apoca-fic, which aren't my usual specialties. I wrote in several new fandoms I hadn't touched before. And I wrote at least seven stories for various ficathons. In general, though, see my answer to # 11.

13. what are your goals for next year?

Write more. Hopefully finish a few of the WIPs. Get back to the Wesley-at-SGC thread I started in 2006. Have fun!
