Reading List Update: #27 - #29

jedibuttercupI got through three books this weekend, shockingly enough. Mostly whilst waiting around for other things to happen, but it was at least somewhat entertaining!
27. Spell Bound, by Ru Emerson. Paperback, 243pp. This was the only non-tie-in book of Ru Emerson's I didn't already own. The summary of this one had never appealed to me before, but someone recently mentioned it was a variation on Cinderella, and that got my attention. It turned out to be very good; all the elements of the fairy tale were there, but some were intriguingly turned on their ear-- the "fairy godmother", for example, is evil in this version. A keeper.
28. Resenting the Hero by Moira J. Moore. Paperback, 304pp. Lighthearted fantasy fun. Not quite as good as "Sir Apropos of Nothing", but better than John Moore's parodies. Oddly, the mechanics of the whole "magic" setup in this one-- the "Source and Shield" pairings-- gave me flashbacks to that subgenre of Sentinel fic with Bonded Pairs, to the point where I wondered if some cross-inspiration had gone on there, but it was interesting. Kept me turning the pages, though not high literature.
29. The Hero Strikes Back by Moira J. Moore. Paperback, 308pp. This is the sequel to "Resenting the Hero". An entertaining addition, but some of the plot threads were unevenly tied up and some questions left unanswered. It did manage, however, to be not entirely predictable, and I liked the main characters.
Next up: Master and Commander, by Patrick O'Brien. A nautical book seemed appropriate, in honor of the fact that I'll be watching all 3 PotC movies this week...

Date: 2007-05-23 12:45 am (UTC)I saw maybe one or two actual episodes in my life. My brother's the one who watched. But I got sucked in through SG-1/Sentinel crossovers, and then due South/Sentinel crossovers. =)
