Fictional Character Interaction
May. 19th, 2006 12:05 pmI'm not going to comment on last night's season finale of CSI, except to say that I am an unrepentant fan of geek-love, and that last scene made me shriek.
Ahem. And now a fun meme, gakked from fanged_geranium:
The Rules:
Choose twelve characters from your fandoms, then answer the questions under the cut. Do not look at the questions beforehand.
1. Buffy Summers
2. Malcolm Reynolds
3. Daniel Jackson
4. Wesley Wyndham-Price
5. John Sheppard
6. James T. Kirk
7. Miles O'Brien
8. Sara Sidle
9. Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell
10. Alan Grant
11. Faramir
12. River Tam
01. Who would make a better college professor, James T. Kirk (6) or Faramir (11)? What subjects would they teach?
Heh. Faramir would be better at it, because he has the patience for learning and teaching; though accomplished at the arts of war, he is scholar first and soldier second. For Kirk, it's the other way around. He's a pretty bright guy-- he can beat Spock at chess, for crying out loud-- but he's all about the action. He floundered as an Admiral until he got Enterprise back.
As for subjects? Faramir would probably excel in languages and the history of Gondor; he was multilingual already IIRC, as they spoke Sindarin in court instead of Westron (common speech), and the history of Gondor would have been drilled into his head by Denethor even if he hadn't taken to the archives and Gandalf's friendship like a fish to water. Kirk, of course, would teach something along the lines of Advanced Improvisational Battle Tactics, or maybe "Prime Directive: Rule or Suggestion?"
02. Do you think Buffy Summers (1) is hot? How hot?
*blink* Objectively? The men in her fandom all seem to go ga-ga over her, so she must have something. Blonde, dresses attractively, ultra strong and flexible, etc. But she's a little thin and short for my tastes, even if I were attracted to my own gender.
03. River Tam (12) sends Sara Sidle (8) on a mission. What is it, and does it succeed?
*snicker* With River, there's no telling what she'd come up with. Assuming for a moment that Sara were somehow indigenous to the Firefly 'verse instead of the other way around, and had fetched up as a passenger aboard Serenity post-Movie to permit them to come into contact, she might perhaps send Sara to sound out the Tams the next time the ship was in the vicinity of Osiris (not trusting the gov't not to capture her or Simon, despite the fact they've been cleared of charges). Unfortunately, I doubt it would succeed; Mrs. Tam might be interested in seeing her children again, but Mr. Tam would forbid it, fearing that it would still be too dangerous for his career & etc.
04. What is or would be Miles O'Brien's (7) favorite book?
IIRC, it was "The Tale of Two Cities". Er, or it might have been his mom's favorite, but I'm going with it for him, too. He loaned it to Julian Bashir (another favorite character of mine) in one of the DS9 episodes.
05. Would it make more sense for Malcolm Reynolds (2) to swear fealty to James T. Kirk (6), or the other way around?
Depends on which universe the other'd strayed into. Both are very alpha male and not exactly on great terms with authority figures, and would be resistant to swearing fealty at all (especially Mal). So I'll go with whomever the fish out of water in the tale would be.
06. For some reason, Lt. Colonel John Sheppard (5) is looking for a roommate. Should s/he share a studio apartment with Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell (9) or with Dr. Alan Grant (10)?
Being the Kirk-figure of his show in the romantic sense, he'd have plenty of appreciation for the attractive Evelyn, but she's a married woman, and he's generally the practical, honorable sort; he'd choose Dr. Grant. Besides, he's used to the excited babbling of intelligent male scientists, and Dr. Grant's brand of disasters would creep him out less than Dr. O'Connell's.
07. Malcolm Reynolds (2), Miles O'Brien (7) and River Tam (12) have dinner together. Where do they go, and what do they discuss?
As the only way I can imagine this happening is in a crossover in which Miles is either a passenger on Serenity or Serenity somehow were jolted out of their own universe and are now docked at DS9, I think Mal would feel most comfortable dining aboard his ship. Miles would probably end up talking engineering type things, discussing the differences in their technologies, and genius River would join in, and Mal would watch them babbling ninety-to-nothing, put in the occasional word, but mostly just shake his head and smile.
08. Dr. Daniel Jackson (3) challenges Dr. Alan Grant (10) to a duel. What happens?
Heh. I can just picture it: a duel of archaeologists! Depends on if they're allowed to call in the intelligent creatures they've met to fight for them. Unas vs. Velociraptor would be a very bloody toss-up. If it were just the two of them, though? Don't care how cool Dr. Grant is, Daniel's been on a front-line team with Jack O'Neill (special forces trained) and Teal'c (lead Jaffa of Apophis' forces) for how many years now? He's a crack shot, and well able to defend himself in other ways as well.
However, he would stop short of actually killing Dr. Grant, no matter what the provocation for the duel was. Daniel still clings to his idealism tooth and nail, even after all these years.
09. If James T. Kirk (6) stole something that Buffy Summers (1) needed desperately, how would s/he get it back?
In the first place, Captain Kirk would only blatantly steal something which he also needed desperately for the sake of his ship and/or crew. Provided it were not a consumable object, once Buffy came after him scythe swinging with Scoobies in tow, she would probably allow herself to be convinced to let him use it first, then take it home with her.
If the whatever were consumable, however? There would be a very, very vicious battle, one which, despite sustaining many casualties, the future crew would win, stunners a-blazing. But then Kirk would feel obligated to do something to help her in return.
10. Suggest a title for a story in which Miles O'Brien (7) and River Tam (12) both attain what they most desire.
Hm. Miles is already married with two children, and pretty satisfied with what he does for a living. But as he was forced to leave his best friend and his home on DS9 behind when his wife wanted the transfer to Earth at the end of the series, I suppose he'd welcome any circumstance in which his family would happily return there with him. And if he were somehow to do so aboard Serenity, then the B-plot could be River convincing the man of her choice that she was the girl of his dreams (Mal, in my worldview; others might choose Jayne or perhaps a new OMC pilot). She desperately needs someone to cherish and believe in her, and her brother Simon has his own girlfriend now and is unable to give her as much attention.
As for title? It would probably be something generic like "Crossing the Stars", if I wrote it.
11. What kind of plot device would you use if you wanted Wesley Wyndham-Price (4) and Buffy Summers (1) to work together?
Hmm. As these characters, despite ending up on separate shows, do have prior acquaintance, it would be less difficult than most of the other possible pair-ups. If one were fighting an apocalyptic situation and needed the other's expertise, they would put past negativity aside and put in the call. That's one of the problems I have with the end of "Angel", in fact; Angel might have failed to call Buffy's crew for help out of pique, but Wesley, despite occasional bouts of crazy after his girlfriend's terrible death, was at heart a very practical, sensible guy. He would have made that call.
12. If Miles O'Brien (7) visited you for the weekend, how would you get along?
Well enough, though we wouldn't have a great deal in common. But since he enjoys recreating historical events in his off-time, such as playing "Alamo" with Dr. Bashir, we'd at least be able to talk Earth history; that would be pretty fun, and I could get him to teach me 24th century games or something.
13. If you could ask Dr. Daniel Jackson (3) to perform any one task or service for you, what would it be?
Mmm. You really don't want to hear my knee-jerk answer to that question. My second response: I'd probably ask for his advice-- and recommendation-- on getting into a grad-school anthropology program, with the aim of ending up in the same profession.
14. Does anyone on your friends list write or draw Faramir (11)?
*thinking hard* I'm sure I've seen at least one Faramir-story go by before, but for the life of me I can't remember whose it was. At any rate, I ordinarily look for my LOTR fix on other sources than LJ, such as Henneth Annun.
15. If Malcolm Reynolds (2) had to choose sides between Wesley Wyndam-Price (4) and Lt. Colonel John Sheppard (5), which would it be?
Mal is a war veteran who fought for many years against a much vaster, stronger opponent. He'd relate to both Wes and John on those grounds, and Reaver/Wraith or Reaver/demon are easy associations to make so their brands of battle wouldn't flip him out too much either. I think if he had to make a choice, though, he'd probably go with John, as John is himself military and also an integral member of a very tight team, something Mal has built for himself, while Wes is a civilian and more often detached from his team for whatever reason than otherwise.
16. What might Dr. Alan Grant (10) shout while charging into battle?
IIRC, Dr. Grant never really charged into battle; he was mostly running for his life, shepherding along whomever else was endangered. If he yelled anything, it was usually the name of the person he was currently trying to rescue from the dinos' jaws, I think. So, "Billy!" perhaps?
17. If you chose a song to represent James T. Kirk (6), which song would you choose?
Oh, this one is easy. The theme song of his series, of course. The instrumental bit after the "Where no Man has gone before" spiel at the beginning of the credits. I can still hum it to myself, and I don't think I've actually watched an episode since before high school.
18. Buffy Summers (1), James T. Kirk (6), and River Tam (12) are having dim sum at a Chinese restaurant. There is only one scallion pancake left, and they all reach for it at the same time. Who gets to eat it?
The Slayer and the Captain of the Enterprise would probably both defer to the crazy girl who can kill them with her brain. =)
19. What pick-up line would Buffy Summers (1) use on John Sheppard (5)?
*lol* I don't think it matters. Any indication of interest on her part, and Sheppard would be following her around like a deadly puppy. Whether it goes any farther than that, though, depends on whether or not he assesses her as a threat to Atlantis.
20. What would Malcolm Reynolds (2) most likely be arrested for?
*snicker* Smuggling, of course. Unless the Alliance hauls him up on treason for the Miranda Wave, but that seems unlikely, as the Operative cleared their slate while Serenity was being repaired.
21. What is James T. Kirk's (6) secret?
Hmm. He probably has lots. Until the movies, one answer would be "How he won the Kobayashi Maru scenario". Slashers might also say, "The true nature of his relationship with Spock".
22. If Faramir (11) and Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell (9) were racing to a destination, who would get there first?
Faramir. Evelyn is determined and devious when she wants to be, but Faramir is a Ranger and probably covered more ground every year of his adulthood before the War of the Ring than Evelyn has in her entire life. (Now, if Rick were with her, it might be a different story).
23. Would anyone on your friends-list write or read Buffy Summers/John Sheppard (1/5)? How about Buffy Summers/James T. Kirk (1/6)?
I sure hope they read the latter, as I've written it. I've also written the former, but as a familial relationship, not romantic. I think I'd be able to find Buffy/John on the TtH website without much trouble, but there really don't seem to be very many ficwriters on my f-list with a foot firmly planted in both the Buffyverse and sci-fi TV.
24. Buffy Summers (1) and Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell (9) reluctantly team up to save the world from the threat posed by Wesley Wyndham-Price's (4) sinister secret organization. Faramir (11) volunteers to help them, but it is later discovered that Faramir (11) is actually a spy for Wesley (4). Meanwhile, Wesley (4) has kidnapped River Tam (12) in an attempt to force their surrender. Following the wise advice of Sara Sidle (8), they seek out Miles O'Brien (7), who gives them what they need to complete their quest. What title would you give this fic?
LOL. I can actually picture that: some kind of cross-fandom Slayers vs. Watchers intrigue, with the engineer, O'Brien, on their side due to his wife and/or daughter being one of them, coming up with a widget that will give the Slayers the upper hand.
I have no idea what it would be called; the title would probably end up being a phrase out of the story, or part of a quote. Maybe something like "Alis Volat Propris", which I'd get a kick out of using because not only is it Latin for "She flies with her own wings", it's also the State Motto of Oregon.
24b. Name three people on your friends list who might read it. Name one person who should write it.
Well... I know maevebran will read anything I write. And I think half of the rest of you would click on it out of curiousity. Whether you'd finish it, though, is another story. *lol* As for who I'd like to see write it? Oooh, lisaroquin. She can make almost any crossover seem exciting and plausible.
25. If you had to walk home through a bad neighbourhood late at night, would you feel safer in the company of Miles O'Brien (7) or Sara Sidle (8)?
Miles has a trustworthy solidity about him, not to mention any ruffians would probably be more likely to target us if Sara went with me instead, no matter how kick-ass she can be.
