River Tam:

1. River knows-- has always known-- that she will never be cured of what the Alliance doctors did to her. Sooner or later her brother's drug cocktails will cease working as her body adjusts to the foreign chemicals meant to plug the gaps natural ones no longer fill; sooner or later, there will be no new drugs left to try. She has exactly that long to figure out a way to adapt on her own to the chaos filling her mind, tame this extra sense human beings were never meant to have as though it were an eye or ear, or else surrender to the inevitable. And she refuses to surrender.


2. She really does see ghosts. Not everyone leaves one behind, but sudden, violent deaths are the most common reason for spirit energy to remain behind when the body has passed on. She'll never admit to it out loud, though; Wash doesn't want Zoe to know he isn't at rest, and she's afraid if she talks about any of the others someone will ask if he's there, too.


3. It isn't that she's in love with the Captain; she knows what that feels like from Inara, and that isn't what she feels. The real reason she spends so much time with him-- the reason her flying lessons have become her favorite part of the day-- is that she can't help but see herself the way others see her. Like malevolent funhouse mirror images, their perceptions of her reach out to make her reflect *them*-- and she hates feeling broken. The things *he* sees in her make her feel powerful. They make her feel *adult*.
   They make her feel whole.

Ronon Dex:

1. Ronon had the equivalent of a typical college-level education among his people before the Wraith came. He doesn't bring it up around his new benefactors, though he's sure at least some of them suspect; it's good camoflauge, being underestimated, being seen as worth only the strength of his muscles and the straightness of his aim. Besides-- nothing about these people who've taken him in is typical. He'd rather not even enter the playing field than try to put his accomplishments out where they can see them and how depressingly small they seem by comparison.


2. There are other reasons behind the persistence of his stubborn Runner persona, of course. He lived that way for seven long years, after all-- always running, always fighting, always alone. But it isn't what some of them think, that he got used to not being touched, to not hearing the sound of another's voice directed at him with affection, and that he continues to wall himself off in solitude now to withstand the pressing swarm of humanity he currently shares breathing space with in the ancestors' city. That isn't the problem. The problem is that he likes it too much. The Wraith will take the humans like they took Melena, or they'll go back to their home planet for good, and Ronon will be left alone again. Better not to let himself get used to their being there, because they won't be, soon enough.


3. Teyla, of course, will probably survive whatever happens with the humans. But Ronon knows he blew any real chance he might have had with her long ago, back on Belka, when he used her trader's facade to lure Kell in for the kill. Still, no matter the cost, he'll never regret that decision.
