You know how sometimes you enter a fandom by the fanfic doorway?

That's me these days.

I mean, it was me back 20 years ago reading my way through Mulder/Scully fic in the X-Files fandom, which I hadn't watched since around S2. (The alien 'oil' freaked me out at the end of S2 and I never ended up going back. Horror and suspense are not my oeuvre.)

But I have very fond memories of reading my way through...golly, I can't even remember the fic archive anymore. But there were a number of "Virtual Seasons" and some fics that were very good - full episode types. Some better than others, obviously, but I still carry the gist of them here and there.

Anyway, more recently, I've read a Heated Rivalry fic or two, but my latest 'go through all the fic' obsession is Avatar: the last Airbender but specifically Zutara fic. And since I haven't seen the series all the way through (I watched Book 1 and maybe got a little way into Book 2, but never got to Book 3), then the AU doesn't bother me. Not that AU has ever bothered me when I'm talking about a pairing I like.

For this, I'm mostly blaming Pinterest, which has turned out to be more addictive for me than Tumblr. I go to FB because I want to know what's going on in my 'real life' friends lives; I go to Threads because it keeps me up to date with world events...and educated about the milieu of life beyond my experience. I scroll through Insta for pictures and sometimes 'turntables' of information and crafts and art and oddities.

But Pinterest has turned into my fandom exploration space. Mostly because all the Tumblr theories end up there, but algorithm'd, not just off a friends feed.

And, after a decade of Maria/Steve and maybe 700 fics, about 1/6th of which I either wrote myself or inspired, it's so nice just to wander into a fandom, plonk myself down, and get to read the best of some 8000 fics without having to create anything myself!

It's true that I've belonged to other fandoms with pairings with a decent amount of fic about my favourites (BBC Merlin: Arthur/Gwen had a reasonable amount, and Bridgerton: Kate/Anthony still has its proponents), but this is ~8000 worth of fics where people have extrapolated four seasons (and a lot of tie-in material) of a non-canon relationship and come out with some beautiful results!

I don't read much in the fandoms I write anymore - as I had to say in the [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth friending meme - "specifically [insert female character here]" because so few of thoe fandoms had a focus on the (usually secondary) female character.

It's true that I'm not getting much sleep, cos I'm too busy reading 100,000 word fics. But this? This is fun.

I feel like I haven't had fun in fandom for a while...

But before I get into it can I say my luck is still going. Woke up this morning with a tick right on the edge of my arm pit with a 2 by 1 inch red spot surrounding it. Either it's erythema migrans or my blood thinners and the ticks did NOT play well. Off I go to urgent care to get probiotic antibiotics (because we are lymes and alpha gow central around here) They've made changes. No more 1 weeks worth of doxycycline and vomiting. It's just 1 day, mega dose. And they gave me anti nausea meds. I'm holding in.

So let's talk world building. I mentioned struggling through TJ Klune's We Burned So Bright with the worldbuilding as it is (about half way in it finally mentions getting gas is getting hard) with the gas situation and frankly everyone seems too calm for knowing the world is ending.

This whole worldbuilding pain started last week at the con when meeting merfolk and knowing there is an open call for merfolk from their point of view and wanting their culture (actual merfolk not humans as mers) and I was thinking how much world building do I want to put in for a short story that isn't paying fantastic. Because I can see her with her whistle/whalesong language and her chromatophores changing color. And then I get into...what the hell do THEY call whales, dolphins, sharks, humans. And then it gets daunting.

Then it spiraled into my current novel. Do they have horses, dogs, cats or something else? I went the lazy route and said yes. People like horses, dogs and cats and it's freaking hard coming up with weird animals and getting people to see it as you see it. I mean I could show a not-horse pulling a cart or someone riding astride.

So my question to you is if you do fantasy worlds how do you tackle the animal/plant issues?

Summary:

With the right bait, even a deadly predator can be captured... or so they thought. In time, this leads to a fuller family than Drizzt could have dreamed of.

The Right Bait: Zaknakein's Tale

"Zaknafein, father of Drizzt and Vierna, I have a question I may only ask once of you. I swear by the life you gave both of your children, I wish you to know freedom. Will you accept life once more, and help guide us, as well as your grandson?"

The man who had known peace since choosing to die in the place of his son very nearly told the known, and despised, voice to drop into the Abyss. Yet, he was a tactician, a man who had learned to weigh all options, determine the least harmful lie, and build his successes from there.

A grandson? His son and daughter named in the request? And any priestess would of course swear by her own life, being as self-interested as they were, but the phrasing of it was so odd.

"I will."

The room was blissfully dark, only three people near him as Zaknafein fully processed that yes, he lived again.

Four, actually, as he turned his head to see the exhausted face of his daughter on the pillow beside his. She gave a faint smile, then closed her eyes, obviously choosing trust for the others present.

The hat and eye-patch — left eye today — proclaimed his lover as one of those other presences. Opposite him was his son, grown strong and more mature in all of his lines. The young drow, likely just of an age to be schooled, was unknown to him, but a death memory flickered up.

Grandson.

"Can't a man come back to life in privacy?" he managed to say, shifting to get upright, at least sitting that way.

Drizzt was the one that moved to help him do so, putting a bolster behind his back.

"Well, someone had to be on hand to protect your daughter, and keep this pair from spiriting you back to their home among the goodly ones," Jarlaxle proclaimed.

Drizzt snorted. "I'd hardly do so, and Kastan, he's teasing."

"Grandfather would be welcome, Father, but that doesn't keep Aunt protected."

Zaknafein's eyes shot to his son in shock, having presumed it was the elder child that had born progeny. Drizzt gave the barest shake of his head about the subject, and he let go of it.

"So where are we?" he asked instead.

"A fascinating place called Skullport," Jarlaxle said, dropping on the bed at Zak's hip when Drizzt gave ground. "We have acquired a villa, fortified it, and made it a safe haven for your children to share."

"Vierna is on leave from her duties at the Temple of Vhaeraun," Drizzt said. "I was persuaded to bring Kastan over, as he's been training this last year with me or the Sword Mistress. And my sister does need protection while she recovers."

"I am only here a few days," Jarlaxle decreed. "But my outpost here is aware of the villa, and will keep an eye out for any dangers. Your son," and he flourished a hand in Drizzt's direction, "is known to them, and able to work with them, to a degree."

"Hmm." Zak carefully didn't say anything that might tangle him up too quickly in Jarlaxle's plotting; he had a family to re-learn… or just learn anew. "Kastan, is it? Planning to help your father get me back in shape?"

"If you wish me to," Kastan said, his eagerness mostly masked.

"Good." Zak reached a hand out to Jarlaxle then. "Help me up, old friend," and it felt good to not layer that with the nuances they'd had to use to avoid Malice's suspicions, "so my daughter can sleep. I'll get those tales later, since your time is more limited."

"Gladly." Jarlaxle did so, and didn't even tease much as Zak stopped to embrace his son hard, before clasping the young one's shoulder in passing.

Jarlaxle did leave after a few days, and that let Zak focus on what his new life entailed. He was in one corner of the sofa that was the sole piece of furniture in the main room, tucked against a wall, Vierna wrapped in a quilt with her head on his shoulder. He never would have thought this possible, but not only was he savoring it, but she seemed to be as well.

The other two were in the middle of the open space, practicing footwork of a style that Zaknafein did not actually recognize.

"Tell me your tale, Vierna."

"Not much to say. Your death… your words, maybe? Made me brutally aware of the waste of life. I missed Drizzt, for all I did not yet understand that was what I felt. You not being there actively hurt. And the drawn out war with Hun'ett was… just piling up more deaths.

"And I walked away, once I had the whispers of my Lord encouraging me. Jarlaxle found me in the city I was originally staying in to learn my new place. Once he told me Dinin had secured your body in the House fall, I had a goal, and this place was more suitable to gain the experience and lessons I needed." She then sighed. "We did not expect my brother, my Lord and I."

"He is still strange then?"

"Oh, that's one word for it. He likes going out under the skies of the Surface, and he is entirely too good, but he is my brother, my wean-son, and we have decided that our family comes ahead of deities."

"As long as yours remembers not to set you at odds with me," Drizzt said mildly, showing he was paying attention, even as he kept up the steps of this teaching.

"Goes both ways, brother-mine," she sing-songed at him. Zak had to chuckle at them, before tapping out a question on her arm.

"The boy?"

She considered, then tapped her answer back. "They hunted him, using the boy as bait. Neither the mother nor Briza survived it."

Zak winced a bit; he had no doubt that both women had learned the skill of Drizzt's blades in a swift hurry for endangering any child, let alone one he might have suspected as being his own.

"So how did you come to be here, Drizzt?" he asked, slowly stroking Vierna's hair.

"Went above, with help from the svirfneblin maps and gear. Kastan and I found a human family, protected them from danger, but those who came to investigate helped us find drow like ourselves.

"Kastan needed to be safe, somewhere he could learn and grow strong."

"But Father will be quite happy when he can explore the Surface more," Kastan interjected without a mistake in the complex foot shuffle he was practicing. "He does go, now and then, but never for long. And I haven't lacked for anything, from him, since he rescued me from the one who bore me."

"The followers of Eilistraee have a community nearby. They trade here, and learning of my sister's presence, her need for resources as she grew stronger, led to our choice to ally. I only brought Kastan over this time because we knew it would be soon… and he is able to defend himself adequately.

"Which made the journey safer."

"Looking forward to helping make that skill shine."

Drizzt turned, looking at his father. "No need to push, to rush it, or to be more than firm, not now. Neither of the Twins would ask it of our young."

Zaknafein saw something in that need to speak up, to challenge the way Drizzt himself had learned… and he found that he approved strongly.

"No. It will be good, to take time to see how the mistakes happened, work out better habits with practice instead of force," he told his son, and Drizzt relaxed again.

Privately, Zak was damn glad the boy would stand up so firmly to him… proving the strangeness had definitely survived.

A message had come for Drizzt, and though he'd been loathe to leave the rest of them — Kastan just now training, Zaknafein gathering his stamina back, and Vierna recuperating from performing a resurrection — he had not been able to decline the need for his abilities.

"Go on. I don't need stamina to end most threats," Zak pointed out. "Your sister can and will push past this for spellwork. And your son is already better than third year students."

"I'll return, as soon as I am able," Drizzt promised, before gearing up. Zak wanted to ask questions about the tube of long crossbow bolts, and the slightly curved staff, but he would hold them for later.

Kastan watched his father leave, then squared his shoulders and looked at Zak.

"Teach me more?" he asked, the look on his face one that Drizzt wore when he had set on a course and would not be dissuaded.

"Let's practice that elf style he's been working with you on, see how we can better adapt it," Zak offered, and Kastan nodded.

"I just… he won't let himself go be true to himself, not fully, until he's certain I can protect myself."

"Then, grandson, he's going to be holding himself back a long time… because he loves you, and seeing you grow up matters as much to him as it ever did for me. Only he gets the chance to do so.

"Don't rush finding maturity and skill because you think you're holding him back. He wants to be there for you."

Kastan considered those words, took a deep breath, and then smiled. "Right. Then I need to train up to be able to go with him, to the lighter things he should be doing, as a compromise!"

Zak laughed, low and soft, nodding to the reasoning. He'd never want to go above, but if Drizzt ever needed him to, he would. For now, he helped his son the best he could, by helping his grandchild.

Drizzt slipped in quietly, watching as Kastan and Zak sparred, less a teaching moment and more of a joyful testing of skill. He'd only had to be gone five days, as the trouble had been local and magic had delivered him back here for his quick aid.

He knew both were aware of him, proud that it didn't break his son's concentration, and just enjoyed the scene. He didn't mind when Vierna slipped up beside him, just shifting to be her leaning wall, his arms around her waist for added support.

"Not such a terrible life we have now, little brother?" she asked, rather than fuss at him being so protective of her. She was nearly past the drain, after all.

"When I laid eyes on Kastan that first time, I knew everything had to change. But… I never saw this. I never knew we would be a solid family, in ways that matter."

She leaned back against him, head resting on his shoulder, humming quiet contentment.

"We'll keep this strong," she vowed, and he gave a sharp nod, joining her in that intent.

I was at the coffee shop for the new latte release. I wanted to try the salted honey rosemary latte. Not enough (read any) rosemary flavor but over all good. However somehow I hit a ctrl button or the touch mouse or something and shut down my document without the save, don't save, cancel options (or it hit it somehow). I lost an hour's work and 2K worth of novel. Gutted.

And then it started storming. Where's my umbrella? in the car. Did not go to the new store opening because it was lightning everywhere. Did go to the library to pick up two hard copies of arcs I failed to read. And Jesus why the fuck did I ask for an arc of this TJ Klune novella? It's depressing AF and I can't get my head around the worldbuilding. The world is ending but someone is still refining oil into gas and people are showing up for their shitty gas station jobs?!? I mean how else is this RV getting across the country (yes, yes I know, it's not the point but weirdly I can't get past it)

My brain is a nest of snakes lately too. Partly because I don't have work distracting me, partly because something has brought up old insecurities, like really old, ingrained ones. I've sorted through dozens of Bourbon City Steam photos, literally hundreds of them and outside of the one picture where I won that trivia trophy, that is the only photo of me from all three days. I didn't see one of me doing my stuff (but I know the camera man was in there). I didn't make the dances but I was there for most things.

It's like high school and college all over. I'm in every play, multiple bands, an officer in my sorority and I barely exist in the yearbook. I know it's just ego talking but it's odd to me that I don't seem to catch anyone's eye. Would anyone even remember me? Other than two people there would anyone notice if I wasn't? I know the answer. No one would. My one friend didn't even realize I had never been to this one before. Maybe he imagined me there. Maybe that's a good thing.

Sadly I can't put I fucking love science links here for science saturday. They've started a paid subscription to read them. So have these.

Does anyone work on the Open Doors project at AO3? Or know someone who does? I am trying to do something similar on Ad Astra, and need some advice from someone who knows the OTW archive software better.

Specifically, there are a couple of people who had accounts and fic on the old Ad Astra archive who are now dead, and we would like to make sure that their works are preserved by transferring them to the new archive. We would like them all to have the same format that unclaimed works imported by Open Doors have on AO3--"by name [archived by archivist]". We have successfully achieved that with shorter works, but I'm trying to import a fic with 363 chapters and half a million words. It cannot be imported; the archive times out. I thought that if I imported the first chapter and then uploaded the rest of the chapters manually, it would work, but trying to import only the first chapter timed out the archive as well. Then I thought about importing another work that would import, changing the title and chapter text to the one I wanted, and then manually adding further chapters. But it's listing it as just "Archivists" in the author space, without the name of the original author.

Help!

ETA: figured it out myself!

Never mind, I figured it out myself!

The issue is that when you are uploading a fic for someone else, you are required to put their email in the box so they are contactable. This person is dead and I have no idea what their email address was when they were alive, so I put in the archivists' email. So the system decided that it was just by Archivists despite having the name of someone else and having the box checked that it was someone else's fic that archivists was posting.

I made up an email to put in instead, and it posted as "by name [archived by archivist]" just as it should.

Mr. Sinister expected maybe one of them.

"You think you can beat me?" Mr. Sinister began, as the White Queen assaulted his mind directly, and he focused on defending himself from her probing searches. Just as he managed to push her away from his mind, a second assault began, and Sinister took a physical step away from the fallen Cyclops.

Phoenix. Of course she would come to the man's aid, and he knew he was no match for her. He had a general direction for her, but she was not in his line of sight. Still, an energy burst in her direction should disrupt her long enough for him to snatch his prize and escape —

— and when he brought his attention back as the assault let up, the clouds were thickening with terrific speed, darkening the skies.

Twin psychic blasts, showing neither of his first assailants had been removed from the fight landed, delaying the synaptic impulse of 'move' to the muscles, and lightning lanced down in the next moment.

The back of his mind actually congratulated the trio of ladies before he engaged his escape via a transport device.

Jean looked at Emma, then held her hand out. "You were right; he probably would have been prepared for me, but you managed to wear him down."

Emma actually did return the friendly gesture, glancing over at Scott who was coming around under Ororo's watchful eyes.

"Make sure he doesn't make a habit of needing his lady partners to rescue him?"

"Too late," Ororo said, her voice amused with too many memories, and Jean had to duck her head against her smile.

1. How often do you hear live music?

Not very often. I never have been much of one to go see bands or even concerts. A few musicals. The occasional concert by an artist I enjoy. And sometimes bands on a Saturday night down at the pub back in university days.

These days? Very rarely.

2. What was your favorite live musical performance ever?

I don't know if I remember this one with fondness so much as just it's the strongest memory I have. One night after university computer lab, a couple of the people I'm working and doing uni with say they're going to a bar in town to celebrate the 18th birthdays of a couple of the guys we work with. The two of them room together, and their birthdays are back-to-back. It's not my usual scene, but I figure I should really do more socialising with this group, so I agree to go along.

It's a dive bar. On a Wednesday night. In a university town. Kinda quiet, but there's a band on stage that's doing rock covers from the 80s. The floor is an old nylon carpet and we're not going to think about how it's slightly sticky underfoot. The lighting is dim, there's about a half-dozen of us, and after a drink or two, we're singing along with the band who takes it pretty well.

They invite the birthday boys up to sing the Eagle Rock, but somehow end up singing Hotel California. I am served a triple-rum-and-coke having admitted to the others that I don't really drink, and they think that it's hilarious to get me an excessively alcoholic drink for my 'first drink'. The 2xrum&coke is foul, and someone else ends up drinking it. I go for a wine cooler, which is sweeter and easier on my palate. We bawl songs until it's midnight and it's the birthday of the second guy, and then we keep going for another hour.

TBH, the performers weren't standout. But I remember the night the best, simply for the hanging out and the friendships.

3. Do you play an instrument, or sing?

I play piano, I learned flute and tuba, and I sing - happy birthday, at church, in the car, on the karaoke machine.

4. Have you ever performed music onstage?

Does karaoke count? But even without that, yes, I've performed at concerts and eisteddfods when I was younger. Not for three decades now, but then it might even be years since I've touched a piano.

5. Who is your favorite musician?

That's a tricky one. Modern or classical? Artist or musician? Live, recorded, without autotune?

I can't choose. I love them all - Beethoven and his Ninth, Elgar and the Engima variations, Chopin's Impromptus and the haunting notes of Tchaikovsky's opening to Swan Lake. There's Queen's Rhapsody and P!nk singing about falling into trust, there's Billy Joel crooning smooth and sweet and Deborah Harry declaring she wants that man, there's Rihanna singing about being unfaithful and Anna of Cleves rmeinding us that she's the Queen of the Castle... I remember going to see Roxette and Offspring, singing with U2 in the car - raised by wolves | stronger than fear | when I close my eyes | you disappear...

You can't make me choose. I carry it all in my heart.

I did get laundry done but I misremembered when Enterprise closes for the day. It was 5 not four so I ended up making 2 trips to Jackson for nothing. Had I remembered it closed at 5 I would have driven up there and gone to dinner before going to book club at 6.

Oh well. I ended up getting a car not a SUV. I might call and see if I can change it. I didn't want a Jeep but I'm like a car won't be so bad. My bad hip won't be a problem with just a few days in a car. No sooner than I get home the bad hip which hasn't hurt in forever goes, hey remember me? I'm here to wreck your day.

And now I have to go back to Jackson tomorrow. Sigh.

But I cleaned nothing. I wrote little. Maybe tonight.

So the day started well. I ran to Gallipolis on flimsy excuses: I wanted the hard copy of an arc I failed to read on time and knew I never would as an ebook and the library had it. While I was there I was taking my new pendant to its creator to get a longer chain.

I get the book but the store the jeweler was in was closed for the weekend because the power died in that old woolworth building. Ugh. This is like 20 miles away.

I get home and try to do the laundry only to find the lock has been changed. I get the new passcode and yet again some fuck has their clothes just rotting in the washers. I'm too depressed to bother with it (if it's still there tomorrow I'm tossing it on the folding rack)

I go to call for my car and that's when I hit a snag because that's what my anxiety and depression needed today. When I got the hotel room back around Christmas, the schedule wasn't out yet. They had just put out the calls for speakers at that point. I didn't realize that it wasn't on its usual time frame. It's started on a Sunday but I have myself arriving on Friday (It usually starts Saturday) so I call Sheraton to change it and they say it's too late to do that but if I want to call the hotel direct just dial back and click the talk to front desk option. I'm ripping because it's 10 days in advance not 24 hours (which most hotels will let you do).

I call back. There is no front desk option but I get the operator and he drops friday off my reservation in 30 seconds. So much for you can't do that. Apparently when you find someone willing to do their job....

I call Enterprise and in spite of using the card I was given yesterday, I don't get a local agent. I get someone who didn't even know the name of my town. I say thanks but no thanks. I'll drive back up tomorrow...twice, no problems. gah.

And I'll have to make my hotel reservation for my siteseeing part of the trip after the con which is okay because that means I'm not trying to cram into something the holiday weekend which when ELD and I did that two years ago it didn't go well.

I really wish I had a local writers group or at least someone who is interested in my new novel to talk to. It would be helpful. sigh. I miss sharing enthusiasm with others for my project and theirs. Would be nice to have again (or at least something more than indifference)

Speaking of my luck I had something happen today that has never happened. I had FIVE offers direct from the publishers to read their books (and one sounded really good) but three were for June 9th. I already have three for that date and knew I could never commit to these (pouts) two others I might take since one is a series I like and not due for a blog tour until Nov. What are the chances of all this?

Summary: Obi-Wan Kenobi has never known it, but he has always been the Force’s Champion, destined to suffer infinite sadness in defense of the Light. On his last turn on the wheel, responsibility for The Chosen One, the false child of prophecy, had been thrust upon him with no warning, and Darkness held the upper hand.

But this time, the Force has marshaled its power and will protect its Champion until the time is right, no matter how long Obi-Wan has to wait and how much he has to suffer.

    Or,

    Obi-Wan is reborn as a twelve-year old.

He wakes up on a slavers’ ship, with all of his prior life’s memories intact, and he’s bound for Tatooine with a Force-inhibitor collar around his neck, a bomb implanted in his spine, and no way of knowing what state of the Galaxy is in.

Just another day in the life of the Force’s Champion.

Chapter Summary: So many problems that need to be solved, and so little time to solve them.

Nor did the clothes get watched but I have another trip in like 10 days and so much is still up in the air. Once I get that done I can relax.

I did get the summer dress clothes out. Now to get the casual clothes changed out too and who knows with this weather. TOmorrow is cold for this time of year and by the weekend it's going to be 90. Do not want.

I had something to say but now I can't remember what it is. Ah, aging.

    Reading
    • I finished Grim Tuesday by Garth Nix. Very fun!
    • I read some more of Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo. It's good, though I feel like it's going a bit slow. Thought that could be because I just don't love reading ebooks.
    • I finished Deep Secret by Diana Wynne Jones. Love this book! DWJ has fantastic worldbuilding.
    • Ficwise, I've been reading mostly JunDylan and PondPhuwin, mostly stuff from my tbr list. Feeling a bit meh about fic, I can't quite seem to find anything I'm super excited about.
    Watching
    • The roommate and I finished Sunset x Vibes. It was good! MosBank were really cute, as were the secondary ship, who I'm sad don't have any other shows together.
    • The roommate and I started watching Love in the Air. This is our first BossNoeul and I'm enjoying them a lot so far! Looking forward to FortPeat, who I already love, but they haven't interacted yet.
    • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Only Friends: Dream On. Things are starting to come together for everyone! I hope RomeRaffy have a happy ending.
    • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Love Upon a Time. Sweet episode that turned very sad! Kaew and Jom were already sad, but now Phop and Klao too...
    • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Magic Move. Fake marriage ftw! Very interested to see what mess will come from this.
    • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Love of Silom. Sad we didn't get domestic family for long, but hopefully that will come back around. Plus first kiss!!!
    • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the first episode of Enemies with Benefits. Very cute! Jan and JingJing have great chemistry and I'm having fun watching them. Also, I want to go bowling now lol
    • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the first episode of Wu. Not a BL for once! I was excited to see SkyNani though, who we've only seen separately before, and it's very interesting so far. Looking forward to seeing more.
    Listening
    • I've been watching a lot of concert recordings on youtube, particularly of LYKN. They're a lot of fun and it's getting me extra excited to see them in person :D
    • I listened to several episodes of Happier with Gretchen Rubin. Right now I'm on a "field trip" episode where Gretchen and one of her friends are going to the Met and talking about From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Very fun!
    • Also listened to a few episodes of TED Talk Daily. Always interesting.
    Writing
    • Nothing.
    Learning
    • Nothing.
