What an astounding and insightful essay. I was surprised after watching the movie how much their moments stood out in my mind. I watched "Objects in Space" right before I saw "Serenity" and was kind of surprised when my mind jumped to River/Mal at the end of the episode. I thought it was kind of strange, but just shook it off.

However, it was so clear many times throughout the movie, that I wondered if there was anything leading up to this burst of Mal/River goodness. Unfortunately, at the moment, I do not own the DVDs, so I cannot go back and watch all the episodes to see if there was build up. This essay was a lovely way to see all the prior Mal/River interaction that obviously led up to this moment.

In my personal opinion, the true turning point in the movie was the scene at Maidenhead. From this exchange; "Do you know that girl?" "I really don't." He is obviously reevaluating his opinion of River in that moment. To his immediate, unthinking decision to just bring River back to the ship even though he knows what she his capable of. That was the moment that really cemented the relationship in my eyes.
