jedibuttercup: (plot tribble)
[personal profile] jedibuttercup
I know I said I was going to put this up weeks ago, but between the yearly vacay and other exchanges I was in and family-related RL frustrations, I've been a bit low on energy. But I have time now, and I could use the nudge to get my writerly butt in gear again. So; let's give this a go!

What is the Wishlist?

The Wishlist is a multi-fandom fanfiction fest. It started very small and simple several years ago: the premise was simply to write twenty-four ficlets in response to twenty-four prompts, to be posted in December. Fandom gifts, if you will.

The [livejournal.com profile] wishlist_fic community is no longer active, but I participated for several years, and it was a good source of motivation to me to keep writing, so I'm going to collect another 24 prompts this year and see how it goes. :) I can make no promises on exactly when things go up, but I can promise that they will eventually all go up!

(For reference, see my progress on the previous list, stalled for canon review, hopefully all to be finished in November; you'll find the fully completed lists linked there for 2010-2014 as well.)

Rules

  • I accept the first 24 prompts I am given, regardless of who you are or if I know you.
    (ALL PROMPTS CLAIMED)

  • You give me characters/pairing, a fandom and a prompt. (Please don't skip the prompt part).

  • If you don't have an LJ account, you can give your DW/IJ/TtH/AO3/whatever name in an anonymous comment, but do make sure to sign it. If you do not sign with a name I will not use your prompt; I have to have some way to link you the story.

  • If I'm not offering the fandom you're requesting, I reserve the right to refuse the prompt.

The current offerings list is: Buffy/Angel-verse (no comics); Stargate SG-1; Firefly/Serenity; Star Trek AOS or TOS; King Arthur: Legend of the Sword; The Marvel Cinematic Universe (Movie-based only); the Fast and the Furious series; Leverage; The Last Ship; Sleepy Hollow (Seasons 1-3); the Riddick-verse; Jurassic Park/World; Pacific Rim; John Wick; and the Mummy-verse (Brendan Fraser version).

ETA: Person of Interest, Transformers movies, Star Wars!

(I do sometimes take other requests, especially for canons on my current viewing list or continuations of other short-stories/fic series on a case-by-case basis; if it doesn't fit the above fandom list, feel free to ask, but I reserve the right to ask you to find another prompt.)

  • If I find your prompt in any way offensive, I will disregard it, too. Fair warning.

  • Your prompts can be for one fandom only, or a crossover (fusions on a case-by-case basis, and only with fandoms I've written in before) and should be in line with what I usually write. (That's a loose guideline, I know, but basically don't be deliberately ornery, okay?) It can be a quote, an idea, a specific situation, but it really helps to have something to aim for. Throwing Character X/Character Y, 'whatever' at me is going to get you 'whatever'.

(HOWEVER: If your prompt is > 25 words, or if you request an idea that can't reasonably be covered in 500-3000 words? See again: whatever. I'm not a magic story-writing machine, and I have a full time job; the less review/plotting time your idea needs, the quicker I can write it!)

  • I answer the prompts in the order I like best and post them starting in Dec 2017. (Sometimes RL events slow me down, particularly the last few years, but I will always get there eventually).

And that's it! Prompt away! (Whichever site you respond on - I'll keep a running total and close the list when it reaches 24).

Okay, um... how about this? MCU (specifically Ant-Man)/Leverage crossover: Scott Lang's encounter(s) with the Leverage crew, whether before or after he meets the Pyms.

Oh, excellent; so much wonderful material comes out of these prompt-clusters.

Let me give you a choice of three:
(A) ...Perhaps it was time Balthazar took up traveling again, after all. -- that is, the follower to Where No Sorcerer Has Gone Before. You did claim in the comments to that one that you'd really wanted to write "the part where he takes a trip with the crew"....

(B) Following on from That Moment at the very end of Spider-Man: Homecoming when MJ opens Peter's door...I'm thinking that if I were selling tickets, the ones to watch MJ's conversation with Tony Stark would go for even more than the ones for her conversation with Peter.

(C) Also MCU, but a little more crossoverish: it's in my mind that Peter Parker and Scott Lang have a good deal in common, as relatively ordinary guys drafted into the Avengers. That being the case, I'd like to see the two hanging out together either on or off "work" -- say, with either Peter showing Scott New York, or Scott showing Peter San Francisco -- and reflecting on where they fit in.

As an aside, not connected to any current prompts: I have drunk the Kool-Aid paid the $6/month for CBS All Access, am therefore current with Star Trek: Discovery, and am finding it thoroughly watchable. It is -- as new versions of Trek always are -- very much its own thing, and there are aspects that various parts of fandom are howling about, but I'd recommend finding a way to watch if it's at all workable given your particular media setup. (FWIW, the service also has what looks like every episode of every Trek series available in its archive, including the animated series, which may have some value as canon-review availability....)

Discovery's use of canon is...interesting. Their take on the Klingons is kind of heavy-handed, but it's not precisely un-canonical; it just draws from different parts of canon (notably, the Klingons speak mostly in subtitles because most of their dialogue is actually written in the Okrand Klingonese language!). We also have Rainn Wilson as a somewhat younger Harry Mudd, and there are parts of fandom that really don't like some of the writing attached to that so far (though Wilson is extremely good in the part). And the treatment of Sarek is likewise fascinating -- very intricately and defensibly reasoned, but in some ways a very sharp left turn from what one might expect. (James Frain is not quite as comfortable in Sarek's shoes as Wilson is in Mudd's, but then Sarek is not as comfy a character.)

As for grittiness/grimdark? It looks as if it should be (too much Mood Lighting, too many over-dramatic camera angles), and it does feature war with the Klingons as the initial major plot arc. But the core characters are really mostly pretty likeable, and both the writing and the performances reflect that. The most troubled characters are in (strong) secondary roles, not actual leads -- Sarek, Capt. Lorca -- and it looks to me as if the redemption arcs are being set up to outweigh or overcome the tragic ones.

War arc notwithstanding, I'd say that it's no grimmer than the AOS movies, that its overall tone is gradually lightening (much as Beyond is a bit cheerier than Into Darkness), and that the cast they've assembled for Discovery has amazing acting chops (Doug Jones as alien first officer Saru is dead flat brilliant).

I think we'll need to see the full season before we can really pass firm judgment on Discovery, given that the primary story arc is very strongly serialized. But given that they've been given a second-season order already, I am moderately optimistic that the season as a whole will live up to the potential I've seen so far.

The better question about DVDs/Blu-Rays may be whether they actually release the episodes that way; not everything one would like is showing up on disc these days. (Note the singular lack of season or series sets for either Galavant or Agent Carter, both of which I would have bought like a shot.) Paramount/CBS has historically been pretty stingy about discounting the Trek discs (except for the animated series), but that's eased up just a little recently, but at least they've steadily released discs -- whereas Disney/Marvel notoriously doesn't discount much at all and has a good deal of material that it keeps out of disc circulation.

OTOH, I have seen/heard various folk talk about waiting till the full season has been released, signing up for CBS All Access for a month or two to binge-watch, and then cancelling again -- the subscription model being purely month-to-month, there's no financial penalty at this point for doing this, and the net cost to do so is relatively low.

It does make sense. I'm not quite as hard-wired that way, but I do have a strong preference for physical media where I can get it. And I resisted the cable/satellite siren call for decades before I jumped into that briar patch. (I am now out again courtesy of the recent move; I signed up for 'Net-only at the new place, and just last month bought a Roku box, which should end up being adequate for such digital content as I actually need.)

I hope we do get discs of Discovery (and I think the odds are in favor of it, although not guaranteed). I will likely buy them if we do, precisely because that way I *will* have my own archive. The one real plus side of the shift toward digital content -- in both prose and visual media -- is that a bigger chunk of the $$ tends to get back to the creators. (And as soon as the right people figure out that they don't actually need Hollywood to finance top-tier content, the Hollywood money empire is in deep kimchi.)

OK, a nice simple one...

MCU/Buffyverse - Illyria wants to join the Avengers. In fact she's insisting on it. What's she really up to, and how many people will get hurt if she doesn't get her way? Optional Illyria/Thanos...

Thanks for doing this again. Wishlist used to be one of my favorite parts of the Holiday season (along with Yuletide) and It has been missed.

This made picking a prompt this year really hard. When you announced you were going to accept prompts in Oct. I was leaning to choosing another chapter of your truly excellent Buffy/Mummy-verse WIP "Adventures in Rome" (And if anyone else wants to use that as their prompt for this year please do!!!).

Then I re-read Dresden's "Death Mask" and had a mini Buffy marathon in the same week. It got me thinking on why there isn't any Buffy/Kincaid or Buffy/Thomas Raith fic out there. I've both read and enjoyed Buffy/Dresden fic, and I get that he is the main protagonist of the books but he really isn't Buffy's type. Where as Kincaid is so Buffy's type its not even funny. And Buffy/Thomas after "Turn Coat" and "Changes" for Dresden, and after Buffy's resurrection in season 6 just writes it's self. That was where my prompt for this year was heading until I re-read "In This Life or the Next" 1 day before your prompt post went up.

What can I do. I bow down to fate. Please write the next part to "In This Life or the Next" only from Vlad's point of view. I'd prefer if he didn't know that Buffy is slayer and just thinks that Mirena was reincarnated as a normal girl only to be surprised later on. But if you think him knowing that Buffy is a slayer from the beginning is better for the storyline, by all means do that. I trust you.

On another note have you seen Stranger Things and Good Behavior yet? I recently binged watch and I'm kinda in love.

I'm gonna throw in for my usual, a crossover with Dresden Files please. I've been really enjoying Todeswind's stories lately, so I'd love to see a Dresden Files/Stargate crossover (SG-1 and/or SGA) with your choice of character(s). I'd love it if it was from the perspective of any minor characters too, in either fandom.

What I'm hoping for is the Stargate side's Outside POV of Dresden-verse magic. Like are Wizards mistaken as aliens - Ancients, Goa'uld, Nox, Furlings, etc..? Is all the highly visible but non-technologically compatible magic detectable by their advanced sensors? What do they think of the folks on the Paranet; total kooks, but potentially useful for spotting odd occurences that might be hidden Goa'ulds? Or maybe how would someone from Dresden-verse explain their wacky lives to the SGC, if they got recruited or something? (Like idk, for example, maybe Michael's eldest son Daniel Carpenter becomes a soldier and gets interrogated about his family's weird history.) Feel free to set the story anywhere in the timelines of either canon, whatever works for you. No specific plot requests aside from the Outside POV, but extra point if you don't reveal either side's secrets!

Thank you! ♥ (Kudos to you for doing this on your own even without the Wishlist_comm, I look forward to this every year because you always manage to write such amazing stories to come out of all these awesome prompts. Crazy impressive, and so much fun!)

ETA: ... and I just noticed you don't have Dresden Files in your applicable fandoms list anymore! *sad* So, um... alternative! Er, what's something weird and cracky that only you could pull off but would be totally awesome to mix? Oh, I know... how about a Marvel-verse/Jurassic World crossover! Loki meets dinosaurs, and considers them more worthy of respect than humans. Maybe he speaks dino and it turns out they are incredibly sophisticated creatures who are just humouring us? Or he can shapeshift into one and gets mistaken as one of the park's "assets" and drives everyone nuts with his inexplicable behaviour? Or maybe Blue is really his kid or whatever, and the dinos save the world from the Chitauri/Thanos by telling Loki to chill out already so boom, invasion over before it starts because even crazy mind-controlled he loves his bebes. Yeah okay not that one, that's even too cracky for me. *eg* Whatever, I leave it in your ballpark, just gimme Loki and dinos being unexpectedly awesome. Please and thank you! ;)

Funny story: as I was writing my DF/SG prompt I started thinking about scenes I'd read before that fufill the Outside POV perspective, like when Jacob Carter meets Elaine Mallory in Todeswind's story "Shattering Occam's Razor", and then I thought wasn't there another one with Teal'c witnessing magic and getting the wrong idea? So I've spent the last little while trying to find that other fic just so I could read it again and satisfy my craving.

Guess what I found, [personal profile] jedibuttercup? :) Why a certain talented author with a penchant for writing prompts around Christmas time has already written just such a minor-character-centric outside POV with no truth reveal story already! Whaddyaknow, you're so good you fulfilled my prompt 7 years before I asked for it. So honestly, you can put me down as a satisfied customer if you want, I'm quite happy with An Unanticipated Detour as is. Thanks! (Not that I'd say no if you chose to write something else, of course!)

An alternative to LJ's prompt might be: fandom: Kong:Skull Island, characters Hank Marlow and Gunpei Ikari in WWII as they face the language barrier with the first shared word understanding of, maybe, "Run!!" or "Monster!". I've got it! Not the same as what I was thinking, because that bird has flown I think. But something equally funny. The reduced Leverage trio (Hardison, Eliot and Parker) with Tony Stark. Alec geeking out over the tech and Felicity (is that the right name for the Jarvis replacement?), Parker doing that thing where she appears out of nowhere and falls asleep because 'she bores easy'. And I dunno. Eliot just trying to corral them all into going the same direction? Being Eliot? Because honestly, I'd love to see Stark weirded out by Parker getting bored by him XD

*rubs hands together* Okey dokey, since you always write one of my favorite characters so well, I'm going to request one specifically for her and a new favorite character. :)

Crossover: Angel the Series/Jurassic World.

Characters: Fred/Illyria and Blue (Big Blue and little Blue), and any other Jurassic World characters you care to toss into the pot. Spike would be good to put into the mix, just so that Illyria has some moderating influence. Or not.

Prompt: this requires a bit of a timeline shift, but let's say the events of Jurassic World occur concurrently with or just after season 5 of AtS and Illyria finds out about it a few months after the events in the AtS finale "Not Fade Away". She is not best pleased that her favorite pets, which she bred to be intelligent hunting companions, have been brought back and abused. If you want to wait on this one, Jurassic World II is due out in June, so this may wind up being a fix it fic, depending on what happens.

Pardon the edit to add Fred.

So cool that you're doing this! My first thought (because I equate you with the movies now *g*) was Olympus/London Has Fallen, but it's not on your list. *sad face*

So I'll go with Person of Interest since you added that one and I was recently reminded how much I love that show. Either A) John/Harold, alternate ending to the series finale where (since you've written 44 fic - and I've bookmarked that page to read your fic - I'm presuming that you've seen the finale o_O but just in case) you-know-what didn't happen or B) Shaw/Root post-finale where you-know-what ~did happen, how they interact, work together, etc

(Let me know if you can't do post-finale fic because you ~haven't yet seen the finale.)

Thank you in advance!
