I don't know how familiar you are with Spider Robinson and his 'Callahan' series, but in one of them his cast of regular characters encounter an incredibly powerful AI that has spontaneously evolved on the internet. Thing is, because it's the accidental product of a vast quantity of electronic interaction by humans it's very human itself.

I have a vague, unrealised (and likely to remain so) idea for a fic where something like this happens in the Terminator verse and the friendly AI not only deduces the potential existence of Skynet but makes its own plans to prevent this.

John and Sarah's reactions would be interesting.
