This was really good. I like the take on Winona and Frank, because while I'm a sucker for abuse stories, Jim must have been one hell of a kid to raise even without any other issues.

The "I'm not gonna be there" always slays me in the movie. So it's nice to see the "you shoud be here, George" echoed throughout the fic. Because losing someone doesn't go away you just learn to live with it, more or less functionally.

(Impulse Engines wouldn't get them anywhere really, because they're slower than light speed and as distance in space is measured in lightYEARS you can guess how long it'd take them to get anywhere. I always assume that Starfleet is sending them a (small) ship with repair materiels and other stuff. Of course with the way distances worked in the movie getting somewhere with Impulse Engines might not be such a stretch.)
