Thanks for your comments! I got the idea about the counseling from a similar subplot of one of blcwriter's many awesome Kirk/McCoy stories; it seemed like such a "but of course" idea, I couldn't resist including a reference.

And as for Kirk-- it just seemed too easy for him to know right off the bat he'd be promoted. Much as I love him, a little occasional reasonable angst is good for his ego. =)
