jedibuttercup: (beware fainting fits)
I'm more than half-way to fifty books now! Wonder how far I'll get before the year's up?

25. Sir Apropos of Nothing by Peter David. Paperback, 672pp. Excellent fun. This is the standard that John Moore's fantasy parodies were trying to aspire to-- and by comparison, fell far short. Over the course of the story a number of common fantasy themes and cliches were aired and thoroughly sporked, but at the same time the excellent storytelling got me completely absorbed in the life of the main character, which many novels of this type fail to do. I went straight to the bookstore after finishing to pick up the two sequels, but they're currently out of print! It'll have to wait for my next trip to Powell's, I suppose.

26. Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris. Paperback, 320pp. I'd seen mention of the "Southern Vampire" series, and was curious, but couldn't find the first in the series so I picked up this one, first of a newer series by the same author. Interesting. Twentysomething girl with a gift for finding-- though not manipulating-- the dead gets caught up in a small-town mystery. I liked that her gift was low-key, and came with low-key disabilities, rather than extreme ones (*cough* Anita Blake); I also really appreciated that her main support and business partner was her brother. Strong brother-sister bonds are rarely featured in fiction, I've found. I'll probably pick up the sequel to this when it hits paperback.

Next up: Spell Bound, by Ru Emerson.
