Bits of News, and a Quick Meme

Back at work this week. Not so much fun after vacation, but ironically enough, gives me more Internet proximity than gallivanting to the coast and Portland and theater pub and etcetera with the family. *grin* Evenings are still going to be very busy, though, until the 12th.

Speaking of! After the requisite Breakfast With Her Concerned Father, my brother gave his girlfriend a promise ring on Saturday. After about three weeks of actual dating. *boggles* Yeah, I think I called this one last month: sister-in-law sometime next year, for sure, unless something goes seriously awry. They are blindingly cute together. Mom even invited her to participate in family photos yesterday. Good thing I like her.

Anyway. Maybe I can catch up on more of my backlog of comments this week in between job duties. I spent today's borrowed moments distracting myself with a meme-- that one where you pick 12 characters, then answer 24 questions:

Character List:

1. Buffy Summers (B:tVS)
2. John McClane (Die Hard)
3. Zoë Washburne (Firefly)
4. Michael Carpenter (Dresden Files, bookverse)
5. Azkadellia (Tin Man)
6. James Tiberius Kirk (Star Trek)
7. Sarah Connor (Terminator: SCC)
8. Wesley Wyndham-Price (Angel)
9. Sara Sidle (CSI)
10. Evan Lorne (Stargate: Atlantis)
11. Éowyn (LotR)
12. Richard B. Riddick (Pitch Black, TCOR)

The Questions & Answers

1. Who would make a better college professor: 6 (Captain Kirk) or 11 (Éowyn)?

Hm. Both strong-willed, bright, impatient people who'd much rather be in battle? Depends on the timeframe. In general, probably Kirk; he's been through an extensive formal educational process, whereas Éowyn's people have an oral culture. Both have experience in leadership, however-- though hers is primarily on the domestic front, she is a princess, and her uncle did trust her with the reins of Rohan. After she learned peace and settled down with the highly educated Faramir as second lady of Gondor, I can see her fitting into the role of teacher.

2. Do you think 2 (John McClane) is hot?

... Um. Is "duh" an appropriate answer? I think I imprinted on the first Die Hard movie early in my formative years-- in the same period of time when I was reading LotR and watching reruns of original Star Trek in the evenings. And it's not just that I find Bruce Willis in general to be weirdly sexy, despite the fact that he's old enough to be my father; the character of John McClane is exactly my favorite kind of hero, the kind who does what needs doing because it's the right thing to do, no matter how much it costs him and how long the odds are.

3. 12 (Riddick) sends 8 (Wesley Wyndham-Price) on a mission. What is it, and does it succeed?

Oh, good grief. *drools over the idea a moment, then shakes self* As for success: over the course of his run at AI Wesley became a deadly competent man, except when doubting himself or drastically mismatched against his opponent. I doubt Riddick would waste resources by sending Wes on a mission where either would be likely, so-- yeah, of course it would succeed.

As for the mission: If Riddick were ever voluntarily working with anyone, it would probably be after he took over leadership of the Necromongers; Wesley transplanted to that world would probably have ended up drafted into their ranks with the idea in the back of his mind of finding a way to stop them. He'd make an excellent lieutenant for Riddick (to balance out Vaako, perhaps). If Riddick were transplanted into Wesley's world, on the other hand, any situation where he ended up in charge of Wes would probably involve him carving a niche in the supernatural underworld and wreaking havoc on any bad guy who tried to step on his toes; Wes would make an excellent carving tool and resource for him, especially if he showed up during the period when Wes was separated from Angel's team and in need of a new cause.

4. What is, or would be, 9's (Sara Sidle's) favorite book?

Ooh. Before or after becoming involved with Grissom? Before: probably something factual, dry, and related to her job; all her hobbies were work-related for several years on the show. After: probably something specifically associated with him, maybe even the book of Shakespeare he hid that love letter for her in.

5. Would it make more sense for 2 (John McClane) to swear fealty to 6 (Captain Kirk), or the other way around?

I think I remember this question falling on Kirk the last time I took this meme, too, ages ago, paired up with another alpha. My answer's the same now as it probably was then: it totally depends on who's in which universe, and neither would submit to it graciously. Wow, that would be a fun meeting.

6. For some reason, 5 (Azkadellia) is looking for a room-mate. Should they share a studio apartment with 9 (Éowyn), or 10 (Riddick)?

Ooo. Éowyn, definitely. I think they'd get along surprisingly well, especially post-Witch. (While the Witch was in residence, she might have tried to make a Zero out of Riddick, but I highly doubt it would have worked; he'd have reacted very-- strongly-- to that).

7. 2 (John McClane), 7 (Sarah Connor), and 12 (Riddick) have dinner together. Where do they go, and what do they discuss?

Since the only reason I can imagine them in the same place and time at all involves time travel and the machines-- that would be what they discussed, and it would be more of a council of war than a social event. McClane would be disgusted that he had to help save the world yet again, and incredulous about the opponent, but engaged in doing what he does best; Sarah would be appraising both men both as resources against the metal and as possible strengthening influences on her still-teenaged son; and Riddick would be smoldering and impatient the whole time, wanting to get it done and get gone.

8. 3 (Zoë Washburne) challenges 10 (Major Lorne) to a duel. What happens?

Lorne honey, I adore you, but Zoë would grind you under her boot heel.

9. If 1 (Buffy Summers) stole 8's (Wesley Wyndham-Price) most precious possession, how would they get it back?

*blinks* My mind just went to a very bedroom-y place. Maybe because I've written them before? After he got all scruffy and intense and competent, and while she was between guys, he'd have fit right into the category of men she has a weakness for, and he's the kind of guy who'd be able to use that against her to get the whatever-it-is back, even if he found the method distasteful. Provided the precious possession was precious for more than just sentimental or monetary value, of course.

10. Suggest a title for a story in which 7 (Sarah Connor) and 12 (Riddick) both attain what they most desire.

My knee-jerk reaction? "When In the Course of Human Events"

11. What kind of plot device would you use if you wanted 4 (Michael Carpenter) and 1 (Buffy Summers) to work together?

Easy. One of the Blackened Denarii ends up in Sunnydale (or Cleveland, or wherever), and being as it's a supernatural evil the Scoobies get involved. But they're totally unfamiliar with that kind of opponent, so God gives Michael a nudge to pick up his sword and go help them out.

12. If 7 (Sarah Connor) visited you for the weekend, how would you get along?

If Sarah visits anyone, it's because she wants something. And she's as abrasive as the day is long and not particularly talkative whenever she's not feeling secure, which is like 99% of the time. So we probably wouldn't get along very well at all.

13. If you could command 3 (Zoë Washburne) to perform any one task or service for you, what would it be?

Let me just pause for a moment while I consider the idiocy of anyone not named Malcolm Reynolds attempting to command Zoë to do anything. *blinks* ... Seriously, I can't think of anything I could ask of her that she would respond to with anything more than a flat stare. Hm. Advice, maybe?

14. Does anyone on your friends list resemble 11 (Éowyn) (either in appearance or personality?)

Pieces of her? Yes. For example: blonde and female? Yes. Bright and strong-willed? Several. Prone to depression after a very wearying and worrisome stretch of years being someone else's anchor? Check. Wears medieval garb? Yep, there's some that do that too. Captured a Faramir-type of their very own? I believe there's a very lucky few. But I've no idea if anyone has the whole package all together.

15. If 2 (John McClane) had to choose sides between 4 (Michael Carpenter) and 5 (Azkadellia), which would it be?

Depends on whether Azkadellia was behaving like the Sorceress; in which case, Michael. I think they'd understand each other very well, once McClane got over the "whoa, magicians and literal holy warriors" bit. But if she appeared all victim-like? He's a protector, at heart. Which would probably go very badly for him in this case-- there's only one reason for Michael to go after someone with a sword.

16. What might 10 (Evan Lorne) shout while charging into battle?

*thinks hard* Have we ever seen him yell anything while going in, P90 blazing? Other than conversing with someone over the radio regarding what's going on, or possibly calling to whichever Atlanteans are ahead of him and in harm's way?

17. If you chose a song to represent 8 (Wesley Wyndham-Price), which song would you choose?

I'm not up enough with music to pick a perfect one. But when I tried to think of songs I heard recently that might apply, the Jeff Buckley cover of "Hallelujah" came to mind.

18. 1 (Buffy Summers), 6 (Captain Kirk), and 12 (Riddick) are having dim sum at a Chinese restaurant. There is only one scallion pancake left, and they all reach for it at the same time. Who gets to eat it?

Buffy Summers, because even Riddick wouldn't be able to stop her. Though I imagine a lengthy, sexually charged staredown before he gives in, with Kirk observing amusedly.

19. What might be a good pick-up line for 2 (John McClane) to use on 10 (Riddick)?

*spits coffee* If they were inclined that way to begin with? If either of them were going to smolder at the other, it would totally be Riddick, in that stalkery, low-rumbly-voiced way of his. But he might initiate a pounce after some suitable world-saving exercise punctuated by McClane's famous yippie-ki-yay line.

20. What would 5 (Azkadellia) most likely be arrested for?

Any of the Witch's crimes, mass murder via soul-sucking being one example.

21. What is 6's (Captain Kirk) secret?

Kirk's? Oh, I think I answered this one with him last time, too. The biggest one we know about from canon, I think, is the secret of how he beat the Kobayashi Maru scenario. The one I'd imagine up, if I ever got around to writing Trekverse-only fic? How he didn't actually die on Veridian III; Picard sekritly got him medical care (from the EMH, or something?) and made a fake grave, then sent him off to find Spock. Because can you imagine the media/military firestorm if he had publicly survived? Yeah, so did they, and decided to make an end run around it.

(.... I've never read Shatner's novels on the subject of Kirk post-Veridian III, and never intend to.)

22. If 11 (Éowyn) and 9 (Sara Sidle) were racing to a destination, who would get there first?

Can a Mearas outrace a modern vehicle? (Anyone have their Tolkein mapbook handy to figure out exactly how many miles Gandalf covered in five days on Shadowfax?)

On foot, though, Éowyn would probably win; I bet she's in better physical shape.

23. If you had to walk home through a bad neighborhood late at night, would you feel safer in the company of 7 (Sarah Connor) or 8 (Wesley Wyndham-Price)?

No offense to wondrous Wes, but Sarah's even more badass than he is, and less likely to either distract me, or be distracted by me, on a long walk late at night.

24. 1 (Buffy Summers) and 9 (Sara Sidle) reluctantly team up to save the world from the threat posed by 4's (Michael Carpenter) sinister secret organization. 11 (Éowyn) volunteers to help them, but it is later discovered that he/she is actually a spy for 4 (Michael Carpenter). Meanwhile, 4 (Michael Carpenter) has kidnapped 12 (Riddick) in an attempt to force their surrender. Following the wise advice of 5 (Azkadellia), they seek out 3 (Zoë Washburne), who gives them what they need to complete their quest. What title would you give this fic?

.... I'm still trying to get past the notion of Michael as part of a sinister secret organization. Secret, yes. Sinister? Michael? The whole thing has got to be a huge misunderstanding. Since Sara and Buffy are both forces-of-order types in their own worlds, but have not faced Denarians before, maybe they mistake something they see when Michael is on a mission, and the rest of it is a huge misunderstanding and comedy of errors and they all end up joining forces to fight whatever it is Michael is involved with. For example Riddick, who might himself be a Denarian in this scenario?

So, title: "When All You Have is a Hammer" *grin*

WHICH REMINDS ME. How many of you joined me in running out to buy a copy of Small Favor today? *dancing in chair*
