Yeah, that's the one big casting WTF for the new Star Trek. Nothing wrong with Urban, great actor, but physically bears little resemblance to the original McCoy. He's much broader, for one thing, and the head shape doesn't match.
(Maybe since he's the Doctor, they could pass it off as regeneration?)
The guy from Heroes that they cast as the young Spock, on the other hand, PERFECT choice!
ignavus suggested, below, that it was probably more of a personality match than a physical match. And if I think about it, I agree; he probably gave a great reading. But when I think "Karl Urban" I picture The Reaper, Lord Vaako, Éomer Éadig. Maybe the promos will convince me.
...Which character from Heroes does the Spock guy play? I haven't watched since the first few episodes, so I don't recognize actor names.
Sylar. If you haven't seen him, his name is Zachary Quinto (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0704270/).
And, because I'm a complete whore, you can check out my thoughts, and a list of all the casting, here (http://theformidablenerd.com/blog/2007/10/19/bones-is-cast/)
...You know, you're probably right, when I think about it. I bet he did a really great reading for it.
It's just, when I picture Karl Urban, I picture The Reaper, Lord Vaako, or Eomer. Wielders of deadly weapons. Not Dr. McCoy. I can't even picture him in a Starfleet uniform. I'll have to wait for the promos to pass final judgment, I suppose.
i KNOW. It's going to be awesome. Every time I see Karl Urban I see him as Cupid in Hercules.... now that takes me back. This movie is going to be a riot.
OMG... I just remembered that... I couldn't figure out why I had this smirky connection with him or where my idea that he'd be good as McCoy came from... now I remember why. Thanks. :D
From what I've seen of Urban, he's pretty darn good actor and has a big screen prescience. I just hope he doesn't overwhelm some of the other castmembers :)
Zachary Quinto's character was only shown in the shadows during the first few Heroes episodes so that's why you probably don't remember him.
I've always meant to catch up on Heroes, but the more I hear about it, the more soap-opera-y it gets, and the less it appeals to me. I'll probably catch it on DVD once my brother starts picking up finished seasons.

I know. I keep saying to people, "Karl Urban! Is the new Bones!" and none of them have a clue who I'm talking about until I mention Eomer. I guess it's too much to expect most of them-- women in the 30's-60's bracket-- to be fans of, say, Chronicles of Riddick or the Doom movie, though. =)
I have a feeling I'm going to ♥ McCoy > Kirk in the new version, which is really throwing me for a loop, let me tell you.
I think its best to watch the first season of Heros in as few viewings as possible. When I have a week to think about an episode it isn't as fun as seeing a bunch of them in a row. The first season had some big payoffs for me and I enjoyed it. Haven't started watching the 2nd season yet although its stored on my TiVO.
I was impressed by Urban in Doom. I didn't expect much from that movie, but he owned the end of it.

I'm glad none of them are huge names. It's going to be hard enough living up to the original cast, nevermind bringing their own ego-overhead into it.
I have a sneaking suspicion my favorite character from the new cast is no longer going to be Kirk, though. =)
♥ Karl!

If I think about it as another AU from Original Trek, I have a feeling this is going to be great cracktastic fun.

Yeah.
Right there with you on that one. Though, he probably did a good job on the audition. (EG, very in character)
