Buffy had nothing to talk about with the ubergeeks at the conference.

Notes: For TTH FFA pairing, "Buffy/Dr. Bill Lee". Set during Stargate SG-1 10.15 "Bounty", and post-chosen for B:tVS; also briefly references Stargate Atlantis 3.10 "The Return Part I".

Buffy stifled a yawn, then shot an apologetic glance toward her friend. Fortunately, Willow hadn't noticed; the witch was still deep in conversation with a blonde Lieutenant Colonel.

Willow had been suspicious for several years that there was something going on at the "Tomorrow's Technology Today" conferences, like maybe the military was getting some of their technology ready-made from nonhuman sources. This year she'd finally roped Buffy into attending with her, hoping to uncover proof, but so far nothing interesting had happened. The presentations were boring, the refreshments were icky, and Buffy had nothing to talk about with the ubergeeks when they mingled. Except for--

"…level seventy-five Mage, specializing in engineering and dueling," she heard someone say, and turned to see an energetic, balding scientist nametagged "Dr. Bill Lee" talking to a bored-looking brunette.

"World of Warcraft?" she interrupted, intrigued. It had been one of her guilty pleasures lately; Andrew had introduced her to the enjoyment of venting frustrations in a challenging virtual environment instead of the real world. "I play a human warrior."

"Really?" he asked, turning toward her with a smile. "What server are you on?"

Maybe the rest of the conference wouldn't be so boring, after all.

*laughing out loud* Brilliant! I love that Dr. Lee is getting to talk to someone like Buffy who is actually into World of Warcraft (I thought it was a very dirty trick that Dr. Weir played, even if it was for a good cause).

I was miffed on Dr. Lee's behalf after Weir chose to distract him that way-- pretending interest in both him and his hobby, which he surely felt like an idiot over later. Surely there was a better way!

I don't know who Dr. Bill Lee is, but it's grinworthy.

Dr. Lee has been in 20 episodes of SG-1, is referenced in six more, and crossed to three episodes of Atlantis. He's the go-to scientist whenever the writers need a Radek figure to back up the normally one-woman show that is Carter. His Stargate Wiki page has more info, if you're curious.

Why is it that I can see Buffy playing that so easily? I mean Giles would have to approve of the games positive benefits. I.E. Helping Buffy with her strategizing, hand to eye coordination and working with others. Plus it let her and Bill have interaction and Bill is very much of the geeky awesome.

Of course. =) And it would, in addition, be a neat way of keeping Buffy from getting bored-- with so many baby Slayers around Slaying, she probably only gets called out for the big stuff these days, and sitting around in the sun in Rome would only keep her occupied for so long!

Yup. Ack, and I'm getting more plot bunnies now: them becoming in-game buddies, because of course they play on the same server, and somehow that leads to Buffy's being able to call the SGC in as backup in a later apocalypse...? *drifting off in thought*

It's been a while since I played a MMORPG-- I dabbled in the early days of both Everquest and Guild Wars-- but unless things are vastly different in WoW, there are millions of people playing divided up amongst a dozen or more servers, right? So they can be on the same one before the conference without ever having encountered each other. (Though it would be funny if they had!!)

It would be more natural, though, for them to have exchanged character names at the conference, so then they could IM each other in game and set up a few group quests together, and then one could invite the other to join their guild, and then...

Of course, that would all take place before the sequel began, so as not to over-geek on the readers. =)

It's basically the same, afaik.

Pfft! Over-geek us! Over-geek us! I personally have never played so by over-geeking you might peek my interest and force me to go out and try it.
