we are now at the dizzy stage

I woke up ~6am Tuesday in Ottawa.

It is now 5pm Thursday in Sydney and I have not yet had a good night's sleep. A few hours here and there but otherwise...

I can't math right now, but the world is seriously floaty.

But it is kind of nice to be home again.

Then again: my garden has gone seriously out of whack. :(

[#278 | Dark Forest] Challenge Post

Challenge 278:
DARK FOREST
Some forests are peaceful, beautiful places, perfect for a romantic walk or a quiet camping trip – but not this one.

Legends swirl about ghosts or monsters, ancient stories of something sinister waiting under the trees. Unknown creatures howl at night, and the shadows seem darker even at the forest’s edge. Sometimes people who go into the forest don’t come back at all – or they come back changed.

Write a story about a dark forest.

BONUS GOAL: “You’re going in there? Alone?”

If your submission features this line, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge ends Monday, October 20 at 9:00PM EST.
• Post submissions as new entries using the template in the profile
• Tag this week's entries as: [#] submission, 278 – dark forest
• If you have questions about this challenge, please ask them here

Dear Yuletide 2025

Dear Yuletide Writer,

I have written Lots of Words this year. Feel free to ignore these ideas and use your own — I love seeing how other people think about my favorite fandoms, and I love seeing interpretations that are different from mine (some of my favorite fics are the ones that made me look at things in a new way). Also, please don't read anything into the amount of stuff I have written for each fandom, which has more to do with how much free time I had when I wrote the various sections than anything else; I would be extremely pleased to receive anything for any of these, otherwise I would not have requested them. :D

I am happy to receive treats!

General (things I love, DNWs) )

Sieben Jahre - Tanja Kinkel (Any) )

Some Desperate Glory - Emily Tesh (Lin, Avi) )

Her Smoke Rose Up Forever - Tiptree )

The Secret Garden - Simon/Norman (Worldbuilding, Neville) )

Dune - Frank Herbert (Irulan, Chani, Jessica, Margot - any two) )

The Tillerman Cycle - Cynthia Voigt (any) )

That didn't go as well as I had hoped

Both midterms and yoga

Gave three midterms today and I have only graded one. On the plus side, plenty of writing time. I finished my last two [community profile] fandomgiftbasket stories (to the tune of at least 2500 words, probably over 3K) (there is like one set of prompts I could do but they only want art. I'm not sure I'm good enough for that)

The other good, got two 100% scores on the exam. On the bad I had at least 6 (out of 24) less than 50%. I tell them don't leave the fill in the blanks blank. Give it a shot. I give it partial credit. I might have to start adding 'but think hard if it makes sense' because on the ceruminous glands make this question (ear wax) someone put BRAINS. I...I can't even. And two people on the what is the system called that we use to determine % of the body that's burned (rule of nines) and they said 'nervous system' I figure they cheated off each other because what are the chances two people would independently come up with something that dumb. (I am not pursuing the cheating suspicion because seriously neither got over 40%. doesn't even matter)

And I have two more sets of tests to grade :(

Yoga was well attended (yay), in a terrible room (boo). Hard floors even with a mat was hard on my knees. I could not push up from the floor into downward dog (I can go into it from standing). I handed the standing poses well but since there was nothing to hold on to, I couldn't return to the floor. My leg was shaking too much. I couldn't feel it at all. I know it'll buckle if I try to get down with nothing to hold onto. I had to stand and basically not do the second half of the exercise. So embarrassing. Also frightening was doing the child pose and realizing I can feel whatever the fuck it is in my throat blocking my breathing. I still have about 3 weeks before I see Ent. sigh.

Next week we're moving to a different room, one with chairs so I can either do chair yoga or at least have something to grab onto. This was so much harder than I thought (and I thought it would be hard even though I used to do yoga). I have to look to make sure my toes aren't folded over because I can't feel them. And at the end when I'm telling my parents about it dad's like 'you wasted money on an Amazon mat'

Me - what are you talking about? I've had this thing for years. I've been doing yoga since my undergrad days!

Dad - I've never see you do yoga, (very obviously calling me a liar)

Me - yeah well I have done (I should mail him the old vhs and dvds I have of yoga flows) but I'm thinking I would NEVER let your hyper critical ass see me exercise ever, not even at gun point.

What I Just Finished Reading:

The Cat Who Saved Books - I just didn't get the hype. It was fine but...I've already forgotten most of it

What I am Currently Reading:

Mirage City - the follow up to Lavender House, very different in tone. I would love ALL of the Hazbin fandom (and creator) to read this to see what being gay in the early half of the 1900s was like.

The Queen of Blood - a YA fantasy I've had on my shelf for too many years now. It's not bad so far but yes the first quarter is more dark academia, fit to survive school (eye roll)

Haunted Cemeteries of Ohio - you know why

Lackadaisy vol 2

clean sweep - I think that's the title some romance graphic novel urban fantasy might be decent if not for the icky romance tropes (sorry but alpha males make me want to shoot them in their smug faces, not drop my panties)

What I Plan to Read Next: The Gallery Assistant -got bored with this arc

More comic cons means more news so have some more of the Mighty Nein

and an uncensored trailer that wasn't much different than last night's. I'm still sitting here going why does Beau look so much like Sokka?!?

I posted this a year or two ago (it has a major spoiler if you are unfamiliar with the Mighty Nein) still a great animatic

And I've posted this before. But as I was watching Critical Role, this popped up a few years ago and got me listening to The Mighty Nein because I was so curious after hearing this (I just wished I liked Jester better (don't like Beau at all)

Wednesday What I'm...

Reading
  • I read week 2 of The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. I'm doing ok with keeping up with it this go around.
  • I started reading No Body No Crime by Tess Sharpe. Idk if I'm feeling it. Will likely give it a bit more time before I give up on it, but I just don't know that I'm in the mood for a thriller/mystery atm.
  • Ficwise, I'm still on VegasPete. Currently reading Black Velvet by [archiveofourown.org profile] kerrikins , which has been great so far.
Watching
  • The roommate and I finished A Boss and a Babe. Pretty good! I don't love a workplace drama, but I did love seeing so much of Mike <3
  • The roommate and I watched My Love Mix-Up! Very cute show :) My love for Fourth continues to grow!
  • The roommate and I started watching Vice Versa. I... am not entirely sure I understand what's happening lol But I'm enjoying JimmySea a lot and looking forward to some AouBoom.
  • We watched the latest episodes of Revamp the Undead Story with the best friend and the best friend's coworker. Got to see Dunk for like ten whole seconds and it was great lol We are presumably very close to the end, so excited to see how things will go.
  • We watched the latest episodes of That Summer with the best friend. It continues to be so, so good!
  • We watched the last few episodes of Dead Friend Forever - DFF with the best friend. It ended up being so fucking miserable in like every single way. God, what a terrible watching experience lol Would not recommend unless you like show about nothing good happening ever to anyone...
  • I rewatched Underwater with the best friend for research purposes (for her, not me lol). Still a very good movie!
  • We continue to only watch AEW Dynamite, and even then... Eh, it's just not been holding my attention.
Listening
  • Still pretty much exclusively listening to t-pop :)
Writing
  • I finished my [community profile] crossworks assignment! I think it turned out ok.
  • I wrote a fic for [community profile] ficinabox and wrote an outline for another one. I am not confident in my ability to make it to 10k by the due date, but we shall see...

TransTide 2025

What is TransTide?

Since trans headcanons and the portrayal of trans characters can be personal for many people, writers might be nervous to write trans headcanons without invitation. This mini challenge is for people to signal that they would love to receive trans headcanons, as well as to showcase their requested fandoms with canon trans characters.

Note that this exchange is open to nonbinary characters as well.

To participate, simply copy-paste the following into a comment:

Yuletide Madness Drabble Invitational

It is time once more for the Yuletide Madness Drabble Invitational!

Are you going through the tagset, thinking about your signup, and getting lured down plotbunny holes?

Well, if you are entranced by tiny canons, luscious fandom promos, or letters with prompts that you absolutely adore, and you've got to do something to appease the itty bitty plot bunnies that are nibbling at your ankles, the Yuletide Madness Drabble Invitational is back to meet all your "I don't have time or brain enough to do 1000 words, but that idea is still keen" needs.

How does it work?

Write drabbles or drabble series for Yuletide Madness. Proper ones, where the text of each drabble is exactly 100 words, please. Ficlets are fun, but not all ficlets are drabbles in just the same way as not all poems are sonnets. (You can, of course, post a 1000 word tale told in drabbles, where each chapter/bit is exactly 100 words to the main Yuletide collection, if you like. Just be sure that it is eligible to fulfill the main gift rules for that recipient.)

Give them to people.

Add "yumadrin" or "Yuletide Madness Drabble Invitational" to the tags.

That's it!

*******

As of the start of Yuletide 2025 we have created 939 drabbles, the oldest ones from 2013 when the Invitational. We are so close to a thousand! These little mini-gifts are a lot of fun to give, and to get, and they're fun to create as well. Check out the tag to see what we mean!

Queering the Tide 2025

There are many ways of queering texts and characters. This challenge is for any and all of them! The widest possible definition of queering is used here. If you think your prompt counts, then so do we.

To participate, leave a comment on this post linking to your letter, so anyone interested in queering your canon for Yuletide can find you. Tag any fics for this mini-challenge with Queering The Tide. (I suggest you tag both Queering the Tide and TransTide if the two happen to overlap.)

You can copy/paste this form below for your comment.

The Day in Spikedluv (Tuesday, Oct 14)

Coyotes visited again last night. Pip said that Ti was still half asleep when he gave them a warning howl.

I woke up in the middle of the night (unrelated to coyotes) and started thinking about things like mom’s radiation treatments (we still don’t have any idea when they’ll be) and other things that kept me awake for awhile.

Today was a no-shopping day. I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for a walk with the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, placed an online order, and scooped kitty litter.

In breaking news, the ‘muscle pull’ ~is apparently a sciatica flare up. *head desk* Why, body, why?!!

I read more in Winging It with You, watched an HGTV program, and attended Ireland’s soccer game.

Temps started out at 48.6(F) and reached 54.5. It was still raining when we I left the house in the morning, which made me wonder whether the soccer game would be canceled (I don’t know how wet the field has to be for it to be ‘too’ wet).

Another Repeat Horror/SF Bundle - Eclipse 2E

Another revival, the July 2022 Eclipse Phase 2E Bundle, featuring the 2019 Second Edition of thetranshuman survival SFRPG:

 https://bundleofholding.com/presents/Eclipse2025

The last time around my comments mostly quoted my comments on a previous and somewhat different bundle:

'"I'll be honest - these look like good deals, they're just not where I want to be right now with role playing. As usual with these bundles you get a shedload of stuff for your money, and they do look like pretty good deals. I'll probably download a couple of the supplements because they address areas that interest me - most notably Panopticon - but I'm not going to try to get my head around another new (to me) RPG at this stage in my increasing decrepitude. But I think I can recommend them, subject of course to all the usual YMMV disclaimers."

This time the offer is a bit different, with fewer supplements, but it's a good starting point if you're interested, and all of the supplements from the earlier offers are still compatible.'

Unfortunately Panopticon didn't make it into the bundle, but the rest is a pretty good horror / SF setting - unfortunately still not something I want to run at present, but you get a lot for my money and if you are in the mood for a primarily SF horror setting it's worth a look.

As expected, these bundles will mostly be horror of some sort from now to the end of the month - I have no idea what else is coming as yet.
