Lucky you, to go to DC. I've never been there, and in '87 drove to Key West from CA, but didn't have the time to swing north. Youngest is returning from DC late August; he's enjoyed the Smithsonian, naturally, and also the National Zoo after his work hours. I'll ask if there's any lesser known attractions that he recommends!
