Starting this up again, I've had to keep reminding myself that nothing after "Normal Again" happened the way it did in canon, and that a lot of other stuff has happened since, which makes characterization a little tricky.
I was always a little disappointed with where canon went with Spike, since it felt like Whedon went out of his way to prove that despite all the buildup showing Spike could be good without a soul, actually, no, he couldn't, that would tarnish the whole premise of Angel, so let's make him do something actually irredeemably awful and then send him off to Africa to make it better.... *sigh* So when I started this series, I was trying to get around that, a bit.
