My eyebrows did a Teal'c impersonation too, believe me, when I first got the prompt-- but my main goal in writing crossovers is always to assume 'of course it makes sense' and assemble facts to prove it so from there. I'm especially thrilled that came through with this fic; I've been a Tolkien nut since I was a kid, but it's so intimidating to trespass in his 'verse.
