The theory about the other universe is from the writers themselves-- the ones of them who were Trekkies couldn't bear to believe that they might in any way mar the original, so they made sure to announce that the other 'verse is totally still there. Except that Ambassador Spock can never go home, and most of the Romulan Empire, which he'd spent the latter half of his adult life working to reunite with the Vulcans, is completely destroyed. So, he's pretty balanced on the tragedy front, I think.
I haven't decided yet whether Mitchell's reason for being transferred in the nick of time was underhanded or not. He fascinates me, but we get very little of him in canon, and I've seen him taken in all kinds of directions in stories.
