Star Trekkin' Across the Universe

I'm watching a few old TOS episodes to refresh my memory today. For various reasons, I've started with "The Conscience of the King", and OMG. *laughs* I'd forgotten just how accurate Pine's portrayal of Kirk's behavior with women really is.

The science can still go hang, but every time I watch the movie I get even more impressed with all the love and detail they lavished on the remake in other ways. I love this 'verse, I really do.

... The adolescent Hogwarts escapees writing "Supuhura" and "Spirk" fanfiction, however? *wince* Overall, the quality of new Trek fanfiction on LJ has been extremely high and very enjoyable, but there are already a couple of comms I think I'm going to have to defriend before they harsh my squee.

I think I'm going to spend my bank holiday weekend watching some old Trek episodes. :D Before going to see the movie again on monday night - bizarrely my little brother (he who used to roll his eyes and leave the room at the sight of Star Trek) wants to see it as he's seen the first half on a dodgy copy...

Also - Spirk? The first time I about died laughing then ranted for half an hour about how 14 year olds should be allowed to name stuff... especially when it already has a name...

I am never going to understand the urge to name pairings something cute and fluffy... or by mashing the names together...

*still need an ST icon...*

Kirk got around, all right. There were a few eps where Scotty, McCoy and Spock "got the girl," but mainly it was Kirk.

[Snorfle] I've recently watched a few of the old episodes too - I'd forgotten how outrageously sexist the old series was! Still loving the new movie, though!

As for the shippy stuff, I know where you're coming from - I have a lot of love for the Spock/Uhura dynamic, but some of the fanfics making their way onto the comms at the moment...[Shudders]

Wasn't "Spirk" the original slash pairing?

Also, what the hell is "Supuhura"?

Also:

On the starship Enterprise under Captain Kirk
Star Trekkin' across the universe
Only going forward, 'cause we can't find reverse.

Oh thank you

I have 9 probably very poorly written post grad assignments to mark today and a box of 50 under-grad ones waiting and now I get Star Trekking as my ear worm for the weekend.

And I don't get paid for another fortnight so I can't go see the film till then!!!

Maybe it was from a Roddenberry interview, but someone or other once said that McCoy was Freudian Emotions (id? unsure of term) and Spock was Brain and Kirk balanced the two.

Kirk wanted desperately to contribute to the gene pool, but outside of a miscarriage suffered by his wife in one ep, he failed until the second movie ST. I think I prefer Star Wars Jedi rituals stories, where they have to have sex and it's do it and go.

'Kock' is perfect. Four letters, unmistakable content. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, I am going to gloat so much if he enjoys ;)

I watched The Trouble with Tribbles & Trials & Tribble-ations last night - I only have a few DVDs of Trek... they're so expensive! So mostly I have fan collective dvds that make me feel like a bad fan...

It has overrun the internet, hasn't it? I mean, what's wrong with a simple / between initials? Especially for the original... but like you said somewhere below... it's a sure fire sign that the writer hasn't come across anything other than the new movie and has gone... 'oooh pretty' I shall name you "Kock"! *shudder*

Based on my gut feeling, there are two options here.

a) It's a fic sub-genre where the main plot is asking Uhura what's going on

b) Someone can't spell "Spuhura".

[nods]

I do understand... I remember getting part-way through one of those Hogwarts escapee's and just having to close it and go mow the lawn or something because of the suck.

In other news, you can now suggest that the n00bs go watch some classic trek over at youtube. They've got entire episodes up there. It looked like they had all three seasons, too, which is pretty freaking awesome, because there are a couple that I can't remember ever watching.

Lieutenant Uhura, Report!

Analysis, Mister Spock!

This (http://www.youtube.com/show?p=Zk2dX5DnW_c) is what I meant about the Star Trek on YouTube. They've also got the full-length episodes, sorted by season.

Plus, MacGyver. Score.

Perhaps one of us should post a question to the Community asking what it means...

And then ask when "S/U" went out of style.

*laughing* I haven't heard that song in forever. Brings back many memories that I thought I had managed to suppress.

It will be well in the universe again soon. I promise.
