I haven't done an exhausive search myself over the rest of the states, but from what I hear, this is very typical the country over: densely populated urban areas are blue, and sparsley populated areas are red. I'm sure it has much to do with the personality types that are drawn to each type of locale.
Anyway, the whole election reminds me - and not necessarily in a good way - of a fairly recent Orson Scott Card book called "Empire." Have you read it? It's a little different from his sci-fi / fantasy norm as it is set is very near future US and deals with a only partially unrealistic civil war. Well worth it - as, of course, is true with nearly everything he writes. :)
