When I originally wrote the relationship in, I think I was looking for a way to connect Buffy to the crew through family that wasn't any of the standard cliches. But the more I wrote on the idea, the more I liked it. She might be a little cracked after all those years, but she's still the most successful Slayer in Council history, and some of that's got to rub off on her kids.
