I read in a book of Buffyverse essays once that the author believed after all the growth both characters had experienced, Wes was the best possible match for Buffy among the male characters in both series. And that really stuck with me. Early on, eugh; but after they've both made those impossible decisions and weathered leadership and failed and struggled through, yeah, I really saw it.
