The man who'd sat at Stephen's bedside when he lay dying, pressing Stephen's hand against his chest and taking all the blame for the failed defense of their people on his own shoulders, was no monster. So far, this holiday season has been mostly thumbs-up. Way to whiplash, RL; but I'll take it!

I hope your holidays have also gone as well as possible! As for me, I gifted and was gifted mostly well-received things, and treated myself to a $125 pair of shoes, which I refuse to regret. (Retail therapy FTW.) Also spent a lot of time holding the two-month-old nephew, letting the four and five year old niece and nephew drag Auntie around as their plaything, eating things I shouldn't, and consuming media. (On TV: catching up on Designated Survivor; in theaters, Rogue One, Passengers, and Assassin's Creed, all of which I'd buy tickets for again, for differing reasons.)

In ficcish [livejournal.com profile] yuletide news, I actually managed to produce six stories this year, due to the expanded writing window. All are in the 1500 to 5000 word range; three are in fandoms I've written for before; two are from novels I picked up after being curious about the prompts; and one is for a movie I'd had sitting on my shelf unwatched awhile. All but one of the recipients has commented, all have kudo'ed, and I've picked up half a dozen extra comments so far overall, so I count it a win on that front...

...and I received two excellent prezzies of my own! Many praises and thanks to my pinch hitter and treat writer. ♥ Read and enjoy:

The Power to Sift (1239 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: William Cage, Rita Vrataski

even if you cannot hear my voice (1420 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Suicide Squad (2016)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rick Flag/June Moone
Characters: Rick Flag, June Moone
Summary: June Moone is not an idiot. She shouldn’t have picked up that damn idol, all right? She knows. God, does she know. But one little lapse in the name of scientific curiosity does not make her a complete idiot. She knows that Colonel Waller has plans and those plans include the Enchantress. June knows this and sees it coming from a mile away. Rick Flag, however, she does not see coming.

To accompany my decade-post of Yulefic written, a post for all ten years' worth of the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic I've received! Herein find all 43,949 words gifted to me in 19 stories since 2006.

It's been a long time since I've reread some of these; I was glad for the excuse to go back through them. *grin*

Yuletide 2006-2015: A Decade of Yulefic Received )

Overall, I've really been blessed, I think: some fic I've received have been more exciting than others, but there's never been any coal in my stocking at all. I don't doubt the streak will continue this year, as well!
jedibuttercup: (yuletide)
In recognition of my eleventh year of participating in [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, and the unusually swift assignment matching this year, have a meme! Herein find all 85,800 words I've written for 38 stories for the challenge since I first took up keyboard for it in 2006.

Yuletide 2006-2015: A Decade of Yuletide Gifts )

I should probably do one of these for gifts I've received, too; watch this space for that soon!
jedibuttercup: (yuletide)
So, I'm back from vacation... and it's that time of year again! This will be my eleventh year participating in [livejournal.com profile] yuletide; has it really been that many? Wow. I love the whole atmosphere of fannish glee that surrounds the challenge, and the opportunity to play in smaller or newer fandoms. And I also love waiting up to read whatever's been written for me: it adds an extra sparkle to my holiday season. So. Dear Yuletide Author! I look forward to reading whatever you gift me with!

In general, I prefer something mainly focused on plot and/or character interaction rather than PWP, though porn with plot would be dandy! But for theme: romance, humor, scifi, action, domestic moments, worldbuilding, etc.-- whatever you enjoy writing? I'll probably enjoy reading. I like people with layers, and watching them interact is always a good time for me, whatever they're up to. Fandom-specific notes below.

I do have a few no-go's, which I'd prefer you avoid: incest, deliberate betrayal of trust between partners, non-consensual sex, requested character death, and mundane AUs. Angst is OK, as long as the story is resolved positively somehow; I am not a crueltide participant.

If you want to stalk me, this is my main journal. My fic index posts, split for length, are at DW: Buffy-verse Centric and Everything Else. You can also find me at faviconjedibuttercup on AO3. I am an extremely eclectic writer, mostly gen but with the occasional 'ships (including m/f, m/m, f/f, and OT3s) and frequent crossovers, across a very wide variety of fandoms. But don't sweat it; celebrate our mutual small fandom in whatever way pleases you, and it'll probably please me.

So, down to the details, in no particular order - COMMANDO, THE LAST SHIP (TV), EDGE OF TOMORROW, SUICIDE SQUAD )

I hope I've given you some things to be thoughtful about, rather than boxing you in. Just have fun writing whatever you're writing, and I'll love whatever you give me. Thank you again!

The drive to the residence of one Gregory R. Jones, septuagenarian of mysterious origin, followed much the same pattern as similar ride-alongs had before: filled with idle bickering and speculations on the case, with the exception of a marked lack of the bitter undertones that had plagued their partnership since the beginning. As if everything had changed underneath, without changing on the surface at all.

Passive-aggressive family drama bullshit going on today. Seriously guys? The day after Christmas? Way to put me in the middle. *sigh* At least Christmas itself went well - took Mom to see Star Wars VII and hung out most of the day - as well as Christmas Eve, the designated all-family day this year. I may post a vent post later this evening after the fallout has settled. In the meantime, Yuletide recs!

I wrote three stories this year, one long and two short, only one of which is in a fandom I've written in before; I doubt anyone has or will find me out for them, but all of my recips have left comments, and more people than just the recips have left kudos, so yay on that front; and I received two delightful stories myself! I adore stories where the characters are highly competent on their own terms, where backstory is filled in, and which feature strong sibling relationships, and my writers delivered.

If gen day-in-the-life fic for Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is also something you're interested in, read and enjoy:

Too Many Cooks (2143 words) by Anonymous

This will be my tenth year participating; I love the experience of writing gifts for people, especially in small fandoms, and the whole atmosphere of fannish glee that surrounds the challenge. And I also love waiting up to read whatever's been written for me: it adds an extra sparkle to my holiday season. So. Dear Yuletide Author! You are automatically awesome for offering any of these fandoms, and I look forward to reading whatever you gift me with!

In general, I prefer something mainly focused on character interaction and/or plot, rather than PWP. But for theme: romance, humor, scifi, action, domestic moments, worldbuilding, even fusion stories (Pacific Rim or Sedoretu or Sentinel style, for example) if that's what floats your boat-- whatever you enjoy writing? I'll probably enjoy reading. I like people with layers, and watching them engage intelligently with each other is always a good time for me, whatever they're up to.

Though I do have a few no-go's, which I'd prefer you avoid (aka, not my cup of tea): incest, deliberate betrayal of trust between partners, non-consensual sex, and ABO or coffee shop/high school style AUs. Otherwise angst is OK, as long as it's resolved somehow (I prefer not to close a story feeling depressed; I am not a crueltide participant).

If you want to stalk me, this is my main journal; my fic index post is at DW, or you can find me at faviconjedibuttercup. Just a quick check-in to say Happy Holidays to everyone celebrating today. Mom and I killed Christmas Eve with cheese and crackers, a bottle of wine, and a couple of Christmas action movies (Die Hard and Lethal Weapon). We'll do presents in ... uh, about seven hours? ... with bro and sis-in-law and the littles.

In the meantime, though, I did manage to write two stories for Yuletide this year, both in fandoms I've written for before. And I received:

History of Bleeding - 6427 words, rated T, Bullet to the Head (2012)

I asked for a story about fathers and daughters this year because I have feels on the subject, for obvious reasons. And my Yuletide Author delivered in spades! Gritty just like the movie, but thoughtful and very well written and made me smile, if a little mistily.
jedibuttercup: (yuletide)
Finally defeated the bears at 5:00am this morning (five hours before deadline) and posted my Yuletide story! Not sure if I'll get any treats out this year, but I'll do a skim of the requests list to see if anything leaps out. If not, I'll stick my nose back to the Wishlist grindstone. RL's just been... more of a stumbling block than usual this year.

Also going to see The Hobbit: BOTFA tonight. I'd say "no spoilers please", but ha ha, the book is how old? Pretty sure I know how it's going to end, though it'll be interesting to see if there's any clueless folks in the theater. *rubbing hands together* For all its flaws, PJ's Middle Earth has been amazingly and heart-grabbingly immersive for me. It's a shame it's at an end.

Still fifteen days open on my January talk meme, if there's anything about me or my writing that you want to know!
jedibuttercup: (yuletide)
