jedibuttercup: A view of the castle of Camelot (camelot)
Title: Are You Falling For Me (Like I'm Falling For You)?
Author: [personal profile] jedibuttercup
Fandom: King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
Rating: MA; het/slash/threesome
Wordcount: 11,000 words
Warnings/Notes: For the 2017 [community profile] iddyiddybangbang. Prompted by a reread through that ancient collection of iddy tropes, the Matter of Britain, and Hollywood's latest take on it, the very pretty and also quite iddy "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword." I borrowed Ioan Gruffudd's Lancelot from the 2004 movie, then stirred in bits and pieces from "The Romance of Arthur" for worldbuilding flavor. :)

Summary: In another world, what happened with Lancelot might have been the end rather than the beginning: a step toward the destruction of Camelot rather than a new-laid cornerstone. But to a fighter who'd lived most of his life as a nothing from nowhere, who'd wed for trust rather than romance, a companion for bed and battlefield was the best dowry Arthur could have asked for. [A Magic Made Them Do It story, with a twist.]

Title: we the penitent (with humble heart)
Author: [personal profile] jedibuttercup
Fandom(s): Sleepy Hollow (TV)
Rating: PG-13; het
Warnings/Notes: A canon divergence story, breaking away at the end of Season 1/beginning of Season 2. In which Ichabod stops to ask a question in Purgatory....

Summary: No amount of linguistic detachment could ever now change the fact that regardless of his feelings on the subject, Ichabod had, when put to the question, chosen her partnership over his marriage. 23,000 words.

jedibuttercup: (not my day)
So, it's August already is it? Wow.

I'm mostly settled in my apartment now, adjusting to the shift in finances and missing my niblings like crazy. I've seen them a handful of times since the move; Tiny Man is now crawling! My mom has also acquired a full-time job for the first time in ... probably longer than I've been alive, now that she's finally admitted she has to pay for the upkeep on the house and maintain health insurance somehow before Dad's 401(k) runs out, or she'll be broke before his social security payments kick in. That's been a stressor and a half, and other family drama on top of that has been a major stressor on me.

In happier news-- mostly-- I went hiking with MaeveBran and her husband last weekend at Mt. Thielsen. She made it about three miles up the trail, near the crossing with the PCT; he and I kept going up the West Ridge route until the base of the summit pinnacle, at about the 9,000 foot level. It was amazingly beautiful, and the butterflies were migrating that week; we saw swarms of them even up that high! I had an attack of dumbass on the way down, though; when we reached MaeveBran again I took my eyes off my feet and lifted my walking stick to wave hello, and caught a foot on a rock. Cue instant massive contusion the size of my fist on my left shin, just below the knee, with miles of walking yet to go. A week later, there's still a sizeable knot there, and discoloration all the way down to my ankle; but at least I didn't break anything. And to make up for it we did dinner that night at the lodge at Crater Lake, since it was only about an hour away. Sunset views there: spectacular. Still, I think we'll plan a less difficult mountain next year. :)

Anyway, so what am I ficcing as I recover from all that plus the recent heat wave? I'm about 16,000 words into another Ichabod/Abbie het big bang, for which I'll be looking for an alpha reader soon; and I'm sort of half-way participating in the August Twistedshorts Ficathon as ideas occur. So you'll be seeing short crossovers pop up over the next few weeks. Other than that, we'll see; I missed the end of the signups for [community profile] crossovering while I was on the hiking trip, but I'm considering [community profile] fandomgrowthexchange.

I'll get to [community profile] backagainharry again by the end of the year; I swear it. It's just. Trying to wrap my head around that behemoth with other stressors going on never goes well. Same with the last of my wishlist fic; just can't do the pressure right now. September, October maybe? *squinting at calendar* Yeah, maybe.

Hope the rest of you are doing well!

Author: [livejournal.com profile] jedibuttercup
Fandom(s): Sleepy Hollow (TV)
Rating: PG-13; het
Warnings/Notes: A mid-Season 3 fix-it/divergence story, breaking away at the end of 3.8, "Novus Ordo Seclorum". In which Ichabod reacts just a little bit faster, and everything changes. Titled for the U2 song.

Summary: There they were, literally the only two people in the world. Abbie didn't know whether to view that as an opportunity to breach the distance, or a torturous exercise in being constantly within arm's reach of what she desperately wanted and couldn't have. 18,200 words.

Title: Now That the Dawn Has Come: Parts 1 & 2 of 10

Author: Jedi Buttercup

Rating: R/Mature: for language, canon-level violence, and some sexuality
Disclaimer: The words are mine; the world is not.

Summary: "Alas! We were lost [...]! We shattered ourselves! We left our elder brothers behind! Our younger brothers! Where did they see the sun? Where must they be staying, now that the dawn has come?" (In which Tom and Pope undertake to save the human race. Starting with each other.) 106,135 words.

Warnings: Post-apocalyptic setting; canon-typical h/c, angst, and interpersonal conflict.

Notes: A Falling Skies canon divergence story. Follows "Waiting for the Dawn", which set up the AU during the back half of Season 3. Contains slash between two angsty, foul-mouthed, conflicted survivors of an alien apocalypse, and chronicles the shifting evolution of their family as they do their best to save Earth from the Espheni threat. (Because canon's idea of how to pull that off... could have used a little applied logic.) Title, summary, and chapter quotes borrowed once again from the Popol Vuh, specifically the Dennis Tedlock translation.

Warnings/Notes: An Olympus Has Fallen what-comes-next, established relationship story. AU for London Has Fallen, especially one particular detail not established in OHF. :) Part of the Duty 'verse, though readable on its own. More detailed notes on the story posts.

Summary: "For the last fifteen months Ben and Mike had been slowly figuring out what they were to each other within the boundaries of suits and earpieces and national responsibilities. Long enough to know whether the initial attraction between them was mostly a byproduct of adrenaline, close quarters and secrecy, or whether there was a firmer foundation there, if they were willing to take the risk...." 16,600 words.

Notes: An Olympus Has Fallen what-comes-next, established relationship story. AU for London Has Fallen, especially one particular detail not established in OHF, though I did borrow a couple of lines. :) Part of the Duty 'verse.

Sources: As always, Secret Service details were embroidered from fictional depictions, Wikipedia, and a tell-all book or two. A couple of agent names were borrowed from Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series; and one (female) character appears from the Die Hard universe. (Because I alluded to a John McClane quote in a previous story, and decided it would make sense for a Republican to have been elected instead of a Democrat in 2008-- judging by the in-movie timeline-- if "Live Free, Die Hard" happened to be canon.)

It just tends to be the first thing to go when Main Job + Part Time Work + Family + { WRITING PROJECT } stack up beyond what the regular hours in the day will hold. I really should have started earlier on my [livejournal.com profile] extreme_bigbang ... *yawn*

37052 / 100000 words. 37% done!

It has to be to 60% by April 11. I think I can? *cracking knuckles* So far, for this story, I have:

1. Rewatched fifty hours plus of Falling Skies canon;
2. Quoted Pride and Prejudice, General Patton, Watership Down, and Albert Einstein;
3. Took a swipe at conjugating Latin, then backed away slowly (ugh, the tenses);
4. Reread the Mayan creation myths again;
5. Google-Mapped a bunch of backroad routes all over South Carolina;
6. Researched school colors for a particular town along those routes;
7. Asked my mom what her farmer-grandparents in the South would've had in their pantry;
8. Saved the life of one person so far that Spielberg killed off (many more to come!);
9. Gleefully used the term "BFG" in a weapon-related context; and
10. Included more sex and cursing than in all my stories last year together (which, granted, isn't saying much).

*wipes brow* When it's finished, if I get it finished, it'll be the longest single fic I've ever written in one go (though LM is longer as a series, and BAH will probably surpass it, when complete). Heck, the only story I've previously published all at once that was longer than what I've written for this just so far was its prequel; the next one down was that 30,000 word Eureka time loop big bang, I think. I'm sort of torn whether to be proud of that, since once again I'm burying myself in a rarepair story in a rare fandom that's not likely to attract much attention, and has already garnered me several RL comments of "but why put that much effort into it? why not a real novel?"

.... *sigh* Because! *shaking head with a smile*
jedibuttercup: (aaron eckhart)
... Because I was busy with the third draft of my [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang:

16600 / 10000 words. 166% done!

I think it posts in April? This is the 7th (long-promised) story in my Olympus Has Fallen Ben/Mike series, that's been on the back burner for ages, largely unmentioned because I wasn't sure it ever would be done. I may or may not add an epilogue after I have a chance to see London Has Fallen; we'll see. Meanwhile, it's with the artist now, and finally off my list of "Stories to Finish in the Year of Finishing Stories."

... Anyone want to beta? I don't need much in the way of SPAG, but general commentary would be welcome.
